I have thought about this no-TV-GamePad-only gameplay mechanic.

When I think about Zombie U, how can they possibly do that game without the TV? You are dependent on both screens at all times. Imagine shutting off the upper screen and cramming both screens onto the lower one when fighting Donkey Kong in Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!.

I agree. I hope Nintendo will use all the Wii U assets to deliver great games, hopefully beyond what can be done on other systems, and ignore catering to the one-TV-multiple-needs families.

Do we?... or is that hopeful speculation?

Does the Wii U Controller Pro (whats it called again, is that right?) have analogue shoulder triggers maybe?

A Nintendo rep blurted it out a whiles back (before E3)

That being said, it was pretty blatantly obvious that it was going to happen anyway (and since the Wii U has no GCN ports, the games have to be emulated to work - which means, going by their N64 emulation, that they'll be probably available in HD too! ). No word on Wii game downloads though (even though emulation would be trivial after getting GCN working, I still doubt they'll offer them though - they don't offer anything newer than 2 gens old on the VC, even though they could easily make DS games downloadable)

V1-V2 Dev kit pictures... Who cares really, but it's like a road accident, you still wanna look.

Wii U First Devkits (CAT-DEV V1-V2)
8 June, 2012 | Filed under: Development, Wii U and tagged with: cat-dev, devkits

As we promised we launch this new section with a big surprise for everybody. We have exclusive pictures of Wii U‘s first development kits.

The codename for these devkits (and their next iterations) is CAT-DEV (Cafe Tool for Development) plus the version.

The first thing you will notice is the devkit’s size. It’s trully very small, also looking as if it’s custom made, not “mass produced” equipment.

As you can see from the pictures below these kits don’t have support for the DRC (Display Remote Controller) yet. They only have support for the Wii Classic Controller with a special port (which we will see in our next article). So it’s interesting to notice that at the very first stages of Wii U’s life developers weren’t using the new controller at all.

Other thing you can notice about it is the lack of optical media. Only the newest devkits have support for the propietary media that Wii U uses.

In the back you will see the same outputs as in a Wii console plus the HDMI output and the classic controller port.

In short, we can see that the Wii U first devkits are a strange piece of hardware.

Seem games will heavily use the screen and some will use the play on the talent feature. Seem, like ones who use the screen simply have the option to do both. My worry us they won't be arsed.

Has there been any mention of games that actually allow you to play on the screen? Other than mario.

It does not look like it have analogue triggers. The range of the button is just to shallow. I miss the GameCube ergonomics. I mean, how hard can it be to make a controller with perfect ergonomics? They have done it before!

Something that hasn't been mentioned much, but looking at the demos, and all the games. But great news that wii motion plus seems to be the standard for wii u and not the normal wiimote. Now they just need to release wireless nunchucks

@dazzybee, that was confirmed ages ago, you're so slow. Wii Motion+ only.

I can't imagine why they've not got analogue shoulder buttons - they were a dream on the Cube although rarely used effectively. Times have changed though, and analogue shoulders are used far more. Devs ask for crapable sticks and Nintendo gives in, yet no one thought to ask for analogue shoulders? Madness.

Oh yeah, just read that the sit/source that released those WiiU specs last week is the same site that posted those pictures, so lends a nice bit of credibility they are real, and were backed up by other members.

The mini games are pretty kickarse though and in some ways actually helped pave the way for Miis - in that your own Pokemon that you've personally trained can take part.

Really though, what separates the Stadium games from the later ones is that they're a complete package. It introduced the different cups (little cup, Lv50 cup etc), had the gym leader tower (with the epic final battle against Mewtwo) AND came with a plethora of transfer features, minigames, the ability to play your GBC games on the TV (at double & triple speed to boot!) and the learner's school.

In comparison, the later games were simply lacking in both features and charm/presentation. While Stadium was treated purely as an expansion pack to the GB games, the other games were marketed as full RPGs and not only were those single player RPG modes mediocre, it lacked all the features that the stadium games had (a double whammy) and Battle Revolution was even more bare bones (largely serving the single function of TV battling locally and online with randoms)

Stadium arguably isnt needed any more, but they were great expansions to the original GB games (original JPN one excepted). They're don't have much value as standalones, but they should be judged as they are - complements to the GB/C games.

PBR etc. have different cups including Little Cup etc. Gym Leader castle was superficial, remove the icons and you weren't battling Gym Leaders at all. Mewtwo I'll give you. Mini-games and gameplay on the screen, I will give you

That's the thing though, PBR had SOME of those things; in comparison to Stadium it feels incomplete.

On top of that, the GCN titles were lacking in polish in comparison to Stadium, going so far as to outright steal Pokemon models and animations from the N64 Stadium titles with no modifications at all!

They were half hearted and felt incomplete. Stadium was arguably less ambitious than those titles, but the execution was much better and they clearly had more effort and polish put into them (though the 1st JPN one was the result of a hasty port from 64DD to cartridge, making it very bare bones in comparison)

Probably off topic but what the tart! Posted in another thread and chuffed about my invention so I'll post in the main Wiiu hub.

"For phuck sakes, how's this for visualisation?..

Excuse the wonky mousedoodles and mousewriting which I sped through on an bouncy bed while I was laying down with no mouse-mat of any kind. But to depart away from defending my art skills, I'd like to present to N-E, Nintendo and the world: The Wiiumote and the Wiiuchuck. *Does a serious Reggie face with fingertips touching like Mr.Burns/Reggie*

It has the power buttton, the ABXY face buttons, a stick on the Wiiumote, the home button followed by the 12+- buttons with the speakers at the bottom.
The WiiuSkwiindow offers a Wiiumote grip just like the uPad. You see the player communication lights right underneath the WiiuSkwiindow. Behind the Wiiumote are, intelligently placed, C2 and Z2 triggers/analogue triggers/whatever the hell you smartasses desire (I'm aware of the difference and appreciate what gameplay possibilities 'analogue triggers' provide!).
Of course rumble, headphone jacks etc etc etc are in place and M+ only!

In the other hand is the Wiiuchuck. Motionplus? Of course
It has the stick, directional pad and the C1 & Z1 triggers. No cord linking the Wiiumote and the Wiiuchuck.

What the phuck, guys?!
Best of all three worlds; tradtional game pads, motion remote and screen. Best way to play Zelda or any game for that fact. This is now my dream controller and Nintendo please do this for your next console: FamuWii."

BTW, here's another random fact that'll blow your mind. The 3DS' Start and Select buttons (with the sole exceptions of DS BC and VC games) are hard wired at the SDK level to do exactly the same thing.

It's true! Try it with any 3DS game/app and you'll see that they always do the same action! (that's why you can't press select to use your codec in MGS3D )

So, anyone see the 4chan thread that had retro working on starfox with two screen shots? The title and the map select, loads of details too. Obviously fake, but then the that's been taken down so could there be truth in it....?

Through most of that Patcher video i thought he was talking sense, but then when he said the next xbox would be a $99 cable box...... madness that would only work in the US, theres too many worldwide subscription TV services for that idea to work for the next generation , its possible for the generation after if they start planning now...

He was very complementary of the WiiU which was odd considering past slatings, if it changed his views at E3 that a good thing, isn't it?

Anyone wanna bet that they'll launch a "Wii U Gamepad Plus" with analogue triggers later?
The omission of analogue triggers is just moronic on any and all levels.

do we know for certain they aren't analogue? or is it just speculation at this stage?

Pokémon games? GameFreak have stated that the games are designed to be handheld so there will not be home console.
And I'm getting really annoyed by that lazy decision. Do you agree with this notion of an adventure game not being feasible on home consoles? Because the adventure games on GameCube werent THAT bad... They just needed better basics ala story, music, characters, locations... Etc both Coloseum and XD STILL sell at a high price on auctions and in shops.

The Wii U gamepad can dispell the idea of a pokemon adventure game not being native to a home console - IF they stick their finger out and THINK - there is great potential.
