My Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Nine Planets....

Recommended Posts

Time to make up some new mnemonics, Pluto is no longer a planet.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/5282440.stm?ls

"They agreed that to qualify as a planet, a celestial body must be in orbit around a star while not itself being a star. It also must be large enough in mass "for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit."

Pluto was automatically disqualified because its oblong orbit overlaps with Neptune's.

It will now join a new category of "dwarf planets"."

You beat me to posting this! :p

The only reason Pluto has been called a planet since it's discovery (circa 1930...??) is that astronomers did not yet know of the Kuiper Belt. Pluto is most definitely a Kuiper Belt Opject (KBO).

It isn't even the biggest KBO!

The Millionaire question for a million quid:

How many planets are in the solar system?

(A)12

(B)11

©9

(D)8

And the correct answer according to Chris Tarrant is ©. Hey wait.....

I actually think this is a very good idea, so I can trick uninformed people into wrong answers *evilgrin*

I can see a very good career for this fellow now, since Pluto isn't a Planet anymore I'm sure focus will shift to the other Pluto:

^ Betelgeuse? :wtf:

Those are lots of different stars. The Sun, the closest to us, was only 1 pixel compared to those other ones shown.
