News: WiiConnect24 Worries Over Slight Heat

Reports are going around about WiiConnect24 overheating problems. It isn't as bad as you think...

Reports are going round about a overheating problem with WiiConnect24, causing damage to the GPU.

The problem is caused due to the Wii generating heat while in WiiConnect24 mode - it uses a low amount of power, and only causes heat because the system's fan isn't on in this mode. As with all consoles, a small percentage of Wii's contain faulty GPUs which are affected by this heat.

Most systems won't be affected by this heat, which in itself is rather minimal compared to heat produced by equipment like notebook computers. Nintendo will fix/replace any systems affected by the damaged GPU's caused by this, as well as transfer over your Wii Points and Virtual Console data. You'll need to re-download Virtual Console games, but the ones you have already purchased will be free to download.

3rd parties do make special stands to prevent this

I've always been quite alarmed at how hot the Wii gets in connect mode. Seeing as I never use connect 24, I just turn it on and off manually when I need it now.

I also never use connect24. The connection will be idle 90% of the time anyway, draining power and producing heat.

Design-wise it sucks because every time you want to use a channel that requires connect24 you have to manually turn it on. Would it be so hard for Nintendo to fetch weather and news data on demand every time you star up their respective channels?

Yeah, the Wii's firmware is stupid at the moment.
The whole POINT of leaving it on is to fetch data, but it isnt coded too :?

As for the heat, they should just turn the fade on occasionaly based on temp. (Id be very supprised of the mono dosnt have a little therometer there).

Nintendo aka Codestorm suck for replacements... had to send mine back due to GPU issues, they don't even transfer your Miis over/Game log.. so be prepared to lose data.

Yeah as soon as I heard about this I researched it a bit, found no info so I turned off connect24, it is rather irritating that you have to turn it on and off when you want weather or w.e, I quite liked using everybody votes but I've stopped now because for what it is it's too much hassle to go through it all. Shame really

For people losing Miis, you could just store them on the remote.. or mail them to another Wii and get them sent back to you when you get your new console?

This happened to my Wii a few months ago, I lost all my play history, the new console said I couldn't edit my Miis, which in turn made me lose my gold medals on wii play and sports and my pro status on sports. Also, the first replacement they sent me after the GPU overheated had a giant scratch down the side and it looked secondhand, they sent me a new one that was in a reasonable condition, I expected compensation for them making me lose so much game data and sending me a secondhand console when it should have been brand new as I was still under warranty and I'm a good Nintendo customer.

"For people losing Miis, you could just store them on the remote.. or mail them to another Wii and get them sent back to you when you get your new console?"

Yeah, true. But when you transfer the Miis onto your new Wii, it says these Miis weren't created on this console so if you had Wii Sports or any other game data tied to your Mii you lose it all coz it says your mii has been deleted from the player list. One of the most poorly designed systems Nintendo have ever done.

Can you not put all the saves on SD card?

Game save data you can put on your SD card, and most of it will work fine when you put it onto your new Wii, but as I said, any game that ties your Mii to your save data will just mess up when you put the save data onto your new Wii, even if you have copied or sent your old Miis to the new Wii. These games include Wii Sports, Wii Play and Mario Strikers Charged (You'll lose all of your wifi connection records) and I'm sure Big Brain Academy will be the same. Nintendo did a poor job of designing the Mii save data integration.

My launch day wii overheated in standby and the shell actually started to bulge slightly. I backed up my saves onto an sd card and put my Miis onto my wiimote. When i got it back i stuck wii sports in firs and created a new save. I then went into the SD card management and deleted this new save, replaced with my old on then copied the Miis from the mote. No probs - it still had my stats and my pro status. Only prob is i cant edit my miis. I wonder if other people have done something different for it to lose their stats?

Same here. Wiiconnect24 is on since January and no problem so far. I'd like to add that I live in Athens which usually gets high temperatures.

Mine was getting very hot too, so I just pulled the plug out. I haven't played it for a good 4 or 5 months anyway, but when the occasion comes when I want to play it, I can just put the plug back in. The plugs are quite accessable too because of the way the TV stand is.

Well, ever since I camuflaged my Wii in the bookshelf next to the TV (BOOKS-BOOKS-WII-BOOKS-BOOKS), it got VERY hot when it was in W.C24 mode, because that seems to stragle it from getting air beeing so tightly surrounded. But when I have it on the little bench-thing infront of the TV its not "dangerously" hot... only my eyes get burned since its so damn sexy <3

yes I notice this I always let my wii using W.C24 and i feel the heat in the morning but nothing happen till now I thought nintendo needs to make an updata to let the fan work when you are using W.C24

I think my wii died today of overheating. I'm not sure, but I think that is the case. I don't think the GPU is damaged, cause the only thing wrong is that it can't recognise my controllers. So pretty much it is busted, cause you can't do anything without your controllers.
Damn shit, I've only had it on wc24 for three days and it has already been busted. i've had it for a month before this and nothing had ever gone wrong.

You are running an "ADVANCED NEW FEATURE" on GameCube hardware, this problem was to be expected, but it is still VERY UNACCEPTABLE Nintendo. If they have ever chance in the world of EVER regaining the all time sales record off Sony, they CANNOT AFFORD to have the tens of thousands of defective units that are being added on a DAILY basis count towards the already poor worldwide sales total...
