GC 2007: Best Of Show Winners Announced

The judges at the Leipzig Games Convention have announced winners for the console specific awards and the hardware category. With Mario Galaxy at the show, it's obvious as to what has won the Wii award..

The Leipzig judges have decided on which games have won awards for their showing at the Games Convention, we bring you the result for best Wii game, best DS game and best hardware accessory product (They don't have a best overall game of show). For the Wii, the award goes to Mario...

...

...Oh.

The award goes to Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. In a shocking result, the judges chose this legendary outing over Super Mario Galaxy, because "We finally discover who can run faster and jump higher. The game unites the former archrivals from Sega and Nintendo, renewing the old feud in the form of a sporting contest. Mario and Sonic manage to translate Olympic disciplines into easily mastered, entertaining games fun.“

The winner of best DS game was Eye Training. Nintendo's official release list is still calling this Flash Focus, and it was chosen because "Eye Training trains hand-eye co-ordination, reflexes, visual acuity – and is great fun as well. A non-prescription DS game to be taken daily.“

Nintendo also won the best hardware accessory product category with the Wii Balance Board. Wii Fit obviously had a lot to do in showing off what the board can do. Nintendo manages to combine video games with physical fitness and bring them closer to a new audience. Having already converted the remote control into a controller, the manufacturer now turns scales into a games accessory,“ say the judges.

Me too! They probably thought that Mario and Sonic teaming up, was reason enough to give them the Wii award! Crazy fools.

Interesting about Eye Training, I'll have to watch that. I would have thought that the DS game would be Phantom Hourglass however.

Agree with Nathan. I'd have expected Phantom Hourglass to be a given.

Are they stupid or blind? They could really use Eye Training!! Mario & Sonic at the Olympics is nothing but a sports game. Super Mario Galaxy is much better looking and interesting. Also Phantom Hourglass is way better than Eye Training. See its these kind of awards that send the wrong messages to devs. Games like eye training and mario and sonic are nothing other than the mini-games games we have been getting all year. Give the awards to real games so devs can develop real games.

Eye training is a great game and great concept. Have you played both Phantom HG and Eye training enough to say one is better than the other?

well I have played Phantom Hourglass and I think that no matter how good Eye Training is, this Zelda game will definitely be put along with the best games of the system (and i have a feeling that the later will not be there...)

However I do applaud their bold movement not to include the so called "gamers games" in the awards and if I was working in NOE, I would be really happy with those results. This is a time where those so called non gamers are enticed into getting platforms that cater for their needs with games that can stand up to the "gamers games" or at least they can based on some people. Mario Galaxy will be a hit anyway, getting another award will not change much.

i don't think we should take these awards too seriously - it's basicly just some folk awarding themselves. best doesn't mean best, it means the game that wants its profile rasing the most.

I've been at the GC for five years now. And as long as I can think back of that event, there wasn't a game honoured that you couldn't find on the publisher's showfloors. SMG and MP3 weren't at all. You just could see them in the business area. That makes M&SatOG the next best one. Phantom Hourglass was playable last year, but wasn't this year.
In my opinion they just choose what all the visitors actually can play. Correct me if I'm wrong.
By the way... Nintendos showing at the GC was a joke. They replaced many of the hot girls at their booth to give some old women a try.(yes, they really want to attract all audiences...-.-) Also they have some really nice games in development but only show their fitness and touch gen ones. A showing of wii-sports after already being out for more than a half year isn't that great as well. Very poor...
