News: Nintendo Reveals New Classic Controller

Nintendo show off a new version of the Wii's Classic Controller - it's spot the difference time!

Classic Controller PRO - that's what Nintendo call their new version of the Classic Controller, used mainly for Virtual Console games or as an alternative control method in some Wii/WiiWare games.

Looking at the image shown on Nintendo's official Japanese site, PRO looks like a sturdier Classic Controller with N64-like grips, more spaced out analogue sticks and rejigged shoulder buttons, with rumble and wireless features still out of the equation.

Spot the difference between this and the "old" one...

The site slates Classic Controller PRO for release in 2009 in Japan. Do not weep, for we're certain that Nintendo have plans to release this wonderful new piece of kit worldwide.

If it had analogue shoulder buttons, that would be worthwhile, as it would now do everything the GameCube could do (and be able to play Super Mario Sunshine).

Wishful thinking, I know, but I'd love a re-release of Wind Waker in widescreen and PAL progressive scan, but still with GameCube control.

It's a Classic Controller bolted onto a Playstation controller, obviously. Still looks horrendously ugly.

Supposedly it's not releasing outside of Japan according to Eurogamer who were told there are "no plans" for it. Makes sense since we didn't get the official Wii Gamecube controller either. Not too bothered either way to be honest.

If they had made it wireless, and possibly added rumble aswell I would have been interested.
As it is I cant see what purpose it serves - it may aswell have been made by a third party.

I suppose this means that the clip thing on the bottom of the current Classic Controller won't actually ever be used... Disappointing, I was waiting for a clip-on extension to make it look like the Pro, not a completely separate product.

Don't we have wavebirds for this kind of thing? Buggered if I'm ever plugging anything other than power/comms cables into a console again.
