News: DSi-Only, DSi-Enhanced Game Cards Coming

Nintendo seal the deal with your wallet by announcing that DSi-only and DSi-enhanced game cards are on the way!

Nintendo DSi Project Leader Masato Kuwahara has spoken at the GDC today to confirm that the DSi will not only benefit from enhancements when playing certain DS games, but a card has also been designed for it that can only be played on a DSi.

"DSi Cards" will work exclusively on a DSi unit and will take advantage of its extra horsepower, the larger screens and its cameras, whereas "DSi-Enhanced Cards" will work on both the original Nintendo DS (and DS Lites) and the new DSi, with gameplay enhancements and new features available when played on a DSi.

"You will use these features if you want to create textures from photographs taken with the DSi camera," said Mr. Kuwahara during his talk, The Inspiration Behind DSi Development.

Nintendo implemented a very limited but similar technique in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons for the Game Boy Color, as an extra shop appeared when the game was played on a Game Boy Advance.

Gameloft, who have already confirmed DSiWare support, announced last year that they would be supporting what we now know as DSi-Enhanced Cards. We'd also be willing to wager that the recently announced The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks will somehow benefit from DSi enhancements.

Just in case anyone was still doubting the DSi is to the DS what the Game Boy Color was to the Game Boy...

Pokemon Gold & Silver remakes, DSi-enhanced anyone? :D:D:D

that's cool because dsi has a cpu that is twice as fast, and four times as much ram.

I agree with these guys in wanting more pokemon.

Why this half-arsed release of a new handheld? Either do it properly or not at all. First I was sure about not buying the DSi because I don't care about the camera or some extra features enough, but now it's getting entire games? Why not just announce the DSi as *the* next generation handheld?

It's the same as with the GameBoy / GameBoyColor. Ah well, I'll be getting a DSi then.. ;)

I think this is a bad idea personally, these type of things rarely work with video games at retail:

We'll have DS games, DSI compatible games and DSI games, that's three different types of game all basically for the one system. The average consumer who the DS is aimed at is going to get quite confused when looking to buy.

Of course it could be a clever ploy if it actually works out, gradually phase out the DS games so we are only left with DSI games, but I don't see that happening any time soon unless the DSI uptake is ridiculously high which I doubt it will be

Going for the seamless transition, eh? That's how Apple's been running their show for a good couple decades, so from a business point of view, it definitely has been proven to work.

It was the Oracle games, if memory serves me correctly. I haven't played Link's Awakening, just the Oracle games, and I definitely remember a GBA-only shop when I played them a few years ago. Unless I've wiped an incident where I purchased and played Link's Awakening from my mind... :P

LA is too old to have a GBA-only shop. The original was released in 93, I think, and the DX version in 98. The GBA wasn't released before this decade.

The DX version, however, do have an extra dungeon.
