E3 2009: Wii Vitality Sensor Previewed

Posted by Tom Phillips - Jun 2nd 2009 17:22

In an intriguing moment in Nintendo's E3 conference, company president Satoru Iwata took the stage to give gamers a look at a new Nintendo peripheral "for the future" - the Wii Vitality Sensor...

A strange plastic clip-on peripheral for your finger with a wire sticking out of it. That is the only way we can describe the device, which so far has no games announced that make use of it.

Nevertheless, Nintendo felt the need to bring it out and tease us with it, which really leaves us scratching our heads at what on earth the Big N have up their sleeves for the future.

One thing's for sure - this E3 conference has been the most surprising in years - for all the good reasons!

What the hell is this? - I know Nintendo wants to expand the casual market but the comatose market too? I can see the advertising blurb now - Nintendo (everyones game) including Timmy who's in a coma - just clip the vitality sensor on his finger and let his heartbeat do the rest.

It's crazy at batshit but we know nothing about it yet or how it will be incorporated into games.

I can imagine how this could be used in Silent Hill Shattered Memories, but… what?!! Really strange!

I can imagine this is perfect for horror games. It might scare you more when your pulse goes up. That sort of thing

or

In a hospital-esque kinda game...

actually this is an old peripheral for a tetris game on the n64
i think they got scared of ms conference and they brought it up from the closet
i am somehow satisfied with the line up this year
but xbox 360 is the obvious choice for a serious gamer nowadays(sad to say that as i adore the big n)

Yeah, seen this dozens of times.
It could well have applications in gaming, as master2 says, horror could be an interesting mix with it.

But its not new. Even the design is 99% the same as you can get elsewhere. Ive used on myself once for PC.

Overall, a waste of time.
But still, a good conferance overall.
Golden Sun 3 ftw :)

Tetris 64 did employ something similar, so the technology, to all intents and purposes, is a decade old at least. But it was never realeased in the west.
I think the perepheral is more likely to be used in 'games' like Wii Fit - anything health related is likely to sell big in the States.
