E3 2009: Media: Nintendo Unveils Wii Vitality Pics

The Wii Vitality Sensor is Nintendo's new mystery peripheral. Check out how it looks in high-res inside...

When Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed this little doohickey at Nintendo's conference this afternoon, a collective look of surprise passed between the N-Europe staff... a look which has yet to disappear, as we are no closer to knowing what on earth this really will be used for.

A fitness game where you have to have your pulse registered? A scary horror title where your pulse can't exceed a certain limit? Well, here's some high-res pictures Nintendo have just released of how it looks. Click to embiggen:

I think this could be cool if used for a survival horror game...

It swivels? Not wanting to lower the tone too much, but I can see the headlines now: 'Teenager electrocuted attempting to spank monkey with wii-mote'

Yes curious but not if Nintendo only half heartily support this.

I'm looking forward to Wii motion plus because I think developers other than Nintendo will be behind it but I'm not sure about this.

I think they had one too many brainstorming "circle" sessions, they might have worked in coming up with good ideas but this just doesn't make sense anymore??

Surely an Incredible Hulk game where you have to raise your pulse to change.

Woah, this is approaching the whole new scientific area of neuro-feedback, as the Wii-Vitality might possibly also measure your blood pressure and/or other health related numbers.

The idea of this is that a test person with harmful brainwave patterns, or high blood pressure, can learn to adapt their body to a healthier state themselves, if able to monitor their body's condition in real-time.

This could indeed be very exciting.

er... I don't think you can measure your brain wave patterns through your finger

At first I thought "wha? It looks like one of those diabete blood reader thingies"… But then I started thinking how it could be used, and it got me really curious.

I imagine immediately Silent Hill, and how some parts made me stressed and actually made me afraid of a couple of things… So the heartbeat rises and you could get some things happening on screen like alot of static noise, lots of vibration from the Wiimote and lots of noise coming from it. It would be a rather interesting feedback.

Another good example would be Eternal Darkness. The more stressed you'd be, the more crazyness would happen in the game. Yet another example… Remember those times in Mario Kart Wii you're almost at the finish, but you get a red shell right behind you, or the fear of being hit by a Blue Shell/Thunder/Pow Block? Well, it would most likely read all that stress and give you a small boost. Kinda like what happens in real sports, where the adrenaline kicks in.

Of course this wouldn't happen if you're a cool guy that does'nt get the slightest stress playing games. Well, you have no emotions for games then! Go away you heart-cold metalic heart person… thing!
