E3 2009: Nintendo Reveal DS Successor Cancelled

Nintendo were working on a successor to the DS... but scrapped plans! Full details inside...

Speaking with CNBC, Nintendo's company President Satoru Iwata has revealed that a successor to the DS had been in development within Nintendo, but that the system has since been scrapped - presumably choosing instead to simply update the existing DS design.

Said Iwata:

“In the history of Nintendo there are several such examples. But when we are launching new hardware, the most important is thing is to sustain the momentum. If introducing new hardware won’t do anything to do that, well…"

With the runaway success of the DS, including its recently launched third incarnation the DSi, it is no wonder Nintendo feels secure enough to stick with a brand the company already knows. In two months of release the DSi has sold over two million units in Europe and the US.

Iwata also dismissed the possibility of a Wii price cut to spur sales for the console, stating that the company wished to rely more on a strong games line-up - and presumably that new Wii system colour too!

It's not surprising. DS still prints money at very fast speeds.

the DS still has a long life if u ask me - it wont be for at least another 2-3 if not 4 years till we see a true successor to the DS - for all we know we may get another upgrade to the DSi before the "DS2"

Good, the DS is amazing and still has a lot to give.

The DS has a longer lifespan than the Wii in my eyes, even though it was out two years before it. I'm still more than happy with my DS. =)

Good choice, the DS is like the best handheld ever made, the interface and the software... I'm suprised the PSP is still alive

To be honest there hasn't been a true successor to the GBA. Nintendo have always said that the DS was never a successor to it.

I always remember talk of the Game Boy 'Evolution' which would have been like a Gamecube in your hand. The name might've been what the magazine or site called it, I can't remember as it was a few years ago now..

But yeah, with the DS doing ever so well, there's no point

The DS's is only 4˝ years old, and already sold over 100 million. It'd be a shame to kill it off now, as we're really in a golden age of handheld gaming with that guy.

This is quite expected, and is a perfectly natural choice for any games company.

Whenever a new generation is released, the places are reshuffled and the install base starts at day one again.

Both Nintendo and Sony would rather enjoy their current install base and not blow money on a new generation.

Anyone fancy giving me 30,000 stars for a DS Lite on the Stars Catalogue?

I don't quite agree that for every generation the install base starts again at day one. Backwards compatability has helped gamers especially Nintendo gamers move their collections over from one system to another.

It wasn't cancelled; it's the DSi, which is nothing like the DS/(Lite)...

Kurtle - that's the clever bit. And they're getting away with it. It'll feel natural for people to "upgrade" and eventually with will be mandatory, if you want to play the new stuff.
