News: Factor 5 Were Making Rogue Squadron Wii

Posted by Tom "Tphi" Phillips - Jun 19th 2009 11:29

Factor 5's involvement developing a Rogue Squadron game for Wii is confirmed, as former employees sue the studio about it...

After the recent sad closure of developers Factor 5, it appears ex-employees have made public the development of a new title in the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron series due to their current lawsuit against their ex-employers.

Staff made redundant by the developer's demise are now taking legal action, claiming that Factor 5 fraudulently transferred game material to another developer prior to claiming bankcrupcy and refusing to pay workers.

What developer bought the material for Wii Rogue Squadron is unknown, but this certainly confirms its existence. Could gamers still see the title released, since all progress made on the game has been now been transferred? Or is this the start of lengthy legal proceedings which will see the game killed for good?

Factor 5 are being sued for unpaid wages amounting to over $900,000. We'll keep you updated.

It's a sad twist of fate that this is the second developer to go bust in the past year after working on a Star Wars game (Free Radical on the new Battlefront too).

Apparently factor5 also still owe Lucasarts a lot of money too, how did things go so bad so quickly? As much as Lair might have hurt them it couldnt have done this much damage? I guess we will never know the truth..

I'd love to see Rogue Squadron Wii released but NOT at the expense of staff not being paid for their work, once a settlement has been reached and the people get paid for the work they did on it before all this happened manybe then development can continue.

The bigger question is who now owns the development rights to it - or soon will - and what does this mean for the future of the game / series?

Nintendo should get the dev rights for this. Starfox Wii is crying out for an appearance on this system, especially with Wii Motion Plus. Starfox Wii could feature the following:

- Built around a Rogue Squadron like engine to deliver "benchmark" graphics for Wii (at the time its released);
- Full incorporation of Wii Motion Plus for control of ship and projectile weaponry;
- Deep and challenging single story based Player campaign with 30+ missions (20+ hours gameplay on single player campaign first time through) and selectable difficulty offering extra rewards/unlockables for beating the game in harder difficulties;
- Robust multiplayer featuring local co-op play (for single player campaign), Split Screen Dogfighting mode with these modes also being online as well (online co-op and online dogfights). The online versions of the modes will incorporate the use of Wii Speak so you can communicate with your fellow pilots and advise as to how to approach challenges thrown at you in either single or multiplayer;
- A level creator so you can play your creations and also send/trade levels to other Wii users via WC24;
- Online leaderboards for total scores of points accumulated in each of the missions as well as Free Roam mode mentioned below;
- A "Training Mode" Sin of Punishment style to familiarise oneself with the game as well as a free roam mode where you travel through a never ending field of asteroids and need to last as long as possible while destroying them to get points. It ends once your ship runs out of health (this can also be incorporated in multiplayer as a mode "Astroid Survival");
- Option of using the nunchuck for a movable crosshair;
- Standard third person view + detailed first person cockpit views/designs Rogue Squadron style;
- Full Motion Video sequences depicting key moments within the game (As the games story progresses);
- Full Voice Acting + Orchestrated Music;

I'm hoping Lucasarts own the rights to Rouge Squadron now, they did a good job with Force Unleashed.

I'm not sure how motion controll, even motion plus would benifit flight sim games much.
Maybe holding the Wiimote like you would a joystick?

I guess Wii Motion Plus wouldn't be essential as its almost completely fine on its own as is but it would improve barrell roles as well as provide more smoother movement on screen. Nunchuck would be used to control secondary projectiles. Primary cannon would be fixed...

A level creator Sol? How would that work? Unless it's just for multiplayer maps.

Factor 5 awesome developers but terribly run. You slag off the wii you dig your own grave. I feel terrible for the developers but their bosses only have themselves to blame.

I'd rather not know about this game at all than knowing it was actually in development but the developer went bust :-(
