Golf

All Virtual Boy Games #6: Golf

If you were wondering as to why Red Alarm went for a wireframe look instead of having some simple textures, then Golf for the Virtual Boy shows how the system is not suited for that kind of thing. While having a polygonal course on a “handheld” is somewhat impressive, it was a poor choice for this as it’s often difficult to work out what you’re looking at, and the stereoscopic 3D doesn’t help at all. The worst part of the graphics are the red greens (don’t step on them), with a garish texture. The grid for helping to aim often covers the hole when putting as well.

In terms of how the game plays, it’s a decent, if sluggish, golf game. It uses a power bar that Nintendo typically use in their golf games, although the accuracy part of it is different. A dot moves across a golf ball and you have to time it to stop in the middle. Unfortunately, the visual issues get in the way too much.

Remake or remaster?

There are far better golf games.
