The weekly roundup of everything Gamecube.

Hello again and welcome to the Weekly Digest- C-E's exclusive weekly Nintendo newsletter, which comes to you from the green land of Irelandah, don't you just love stereotypes? To be sure.

Plenty to get your teeth into this week, folks, so we might as well get started.

Free Radical Design, the people behind the TimeSplitters series, announced this week that they are working on a brand new game for the GC, Xbox and PS2. Titled Second Sight, the game takes the form of yet another first person shooter-but with a twist. Like any game worth its salt these days, Second Sight has a unique selling point- it's paranormal theme. According to FRD, the game features "immersive thriller storyline with paranormal psychic abilities, stealthy exploration and intense shooter action" Set for an E3 unveiling? You bet. The company have also confirmed that their upcoming TimeSplitters 3 is on course for a Cube launch late this year.

Less positive news on the third-party front comes from Midway. Word reached Cube-Europe this week that the company have decided not only to cancel their next Mortal Kombat game on the GC, but to effectively cease all GC development- a case-per-case basis will now determine any future Midway release. We're not losing much, frankly, so no cause for undue concern. There have also been rumblings surrounding the future of Team 17, known for their famous Worms series, on Nintendo's console. It's quite possible that they won't be developing any more for the Cube, though they don't rule it out entirely.

Nintendo did well at the recent 2004 BAFTA Games Awards, winning four awards themselves and two other award winning games were on the GameCube.

Bill Bailey hosted the 2004 BAFTA Games Awards on Wednesday 25th February. The awards honour the, ahem, 'best in film, television, and interactive media'. The winning games can be found below, four were won by Nintendo games and the other two were games that are available on the Gamecube.

  • Best GameCube Game: Metroid Prime
  • Best GameBoy Advance Game: Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising
  • Best Strategy Game: Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising
  • Best Animation or Intro: Soul Calibur II
  • Best Adventure Game: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
  • Best Music: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Spot the odd one out- alas, there are no prizes for guessing which. Honouring the PS2's Vice City for the umpteenth time seemed rather uncalled for, though.

This week saw the long-awaited launch of Ubisoft's Beyond Good and Evil. And what an utter delight it is. It is, unquestionably, the finest adventure on the Cube since Zelda, and is therefore an essential purchase. Ubi's other February release, the acclaimed Prince of Persia is also a cracker, even if it is somewhat blighted by many of the sound effects sound like they're from the SNES era. EA have lifted the lid somewhat on their Goldeneye game, which is a sequel rather than a remake. Here's what everybody's favourite mega-corporation had to say:

'In GoldenEye 2, players will explore the dark side of the Bond underworld, playing an agent who was a candidate for 00 status before being dismissed from MI6 for reckless brutality. Players will join ranks with the legendary super-villain Auric Goldfinger, fighting for control of the world's greatest criminal organization. The game is under development at EA Los Angeles for multiple console platforms, scheduled for release this holiday season under the EA GAMES brand.'

Game Informer magazine recently interviewed the producer of Killer7 Hiroyuki Kobayashi about the upcoming game. It was announced that the game will be released at the same time in Japan on both the PS2 and GameCube for financial reasons. Kobayashi-San also announced that the game can be completed within six hours. However if all six scenarios that you can play are completed then the game play extends a further ten hours. Intriguing. Nothing else of note to report, really. March is nearly upon us. The next four weeks are nothing short of historic for the GameCube. Nintendo is set to welcome home new instalments of the Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid and Harvest Moon series- and all three are certified pieces of brilliance. Game on, eh?

See you all next week.
