Feature: Cube-Europe Roundtable 12

Die Hard. Turok. Jedi Knight. Medal of Honor. Nightfire. Timesplitters. All coming out in the next few months, but which FPS' are the C-E staff getting?

This Fridays Turok release sees the start of many FPS'. How do they compare with eachother, what ones will you be getting?

Conor: As a big fan of 1st-person shooters the next few months are very excting for me. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were two of my favourite N64 games, (Goldeneye especially kept me busy for months on end) and I love Half-Life, Quake, Unreal tournament etc. on the PC.

As a big fan of the big G, Timeplsitters 2 is looking like a definite purchase for me. The smooth controls, the fun gameplay, the sharp visuals and of course, the multiplayer make it GameCubes Goldeneye for me. Oh, and there's the chance to recreate Facility in the level-editor :) At first, I wasn't too interested in TS2 but after reading previews and looking at screens I'm definitely going to get it. Probably for Christmas.

Up there with Timesplitters has got to be Die Hard Vendetta. While I love blasting away legions of the enemies with town-flattening nukes as much as the next guy, sometimes you want something a little more cerebal. This is where DHV comes in. The whole interective levels, with people you can talk to to get clues, and the way you can take terrorists hostage and if it's their leader, they'll drop their weapons, but if he's just a henchman they'll shoot you and him. I think my brother will be getting DHV for Christmas. I hope, and pray, he does.

I don't know about Turok. I loved Seeds of Evil and thought Evolution looked brilliant, but initial impressions from over the pond aren't too great. I might rent it though. As a Star Wars fan, Jedi knight 2 does appeal to me. The Force powers you can do look great fun, if I get a job (applied to a few places now that I turned 16). Also, I might get Medal of Honor if I've extra money, it looks to recreat the War in gritty style. As for Nightfire, well, I don't know. Haven't seen anything to get me too excited about it, even though it'll probably be good.

Why haven't I mentioned Metroid? Two reasons.
1) It ISN'T A FPS.
2) Comparing it to the FPS' getting relased is futile. Metroid wipes the floor with every one of them.

Javid: Unfortunatley i can see Turok being a bit of a disapointment from what i have heard from play tests so far, but it does mark the beginning of a great period for the GameCube. I might well buy Turok though as i havnt as of yet bagged me an FPS...which i am so badly craving. When the time comes for Timeplitters 2 and Die Hard though, Turok will start to gather dust as these in my opinion will rule supreme over it. As for which one out of these 2 is the best? I'm stumped, it really is a close matter, but if Die Hard hasnt got a multi-player mode then it will have slightly lowered appeal especially seeing as in TS2 has got possibly a Goldeneye beating multi-player mode, and also offers a death-match arena editor. I cant wait to make my own arenas to slaughter my mates in!!

Both are going to be great though, and i think maybe Die Hard will have a more tactical one player offering...taking hostages and the like. Good stuff, and certainly a very important turning point for the Cube as FPS's are quite possibly the most saught after genre of game there is.

Jim: I have never been a big FPS fan, the only ones I have ever owned are Goldeneye and Counter-Strike. I am however a huge fan of Bond, and although Agent Under Fire was a dissapointment for me, Nightfire is shaping up to be something special. From what I have been told about it, and the screens I have seen, the game should appeal to Bond and FPS fans alike, and it's the one FPS I'm really looking forward to.

Of course, Die Hard: Vengeance and TimeSplitters 2 are going to be huge games aswell. Both are been hyped up as the best FPSs to hit console gaming. I just hope they can deliver their promises...

Link: I have to say that I am not a big FPS fan. I got Golden Eye and Perfect Dark for the N64, but that's because they were must-haves and because they were from Rare. I will get PD0 or whatever FPS comes from Rare, but other than that I don't plan on getting any other FPS's. As for the FPS that will be soon coming out I don't think I will be getting any of them. I'll start my explanation with Turok.

Turok promises an adventure like in the first Turok game for the N64. I never played this Turok game, but I did play the other two and they were pretty good games. Turok 2 was nothing short of huge and, for me at least, impossible to complete even with the cheats. The graphics in, though were excellent and it was a pretty fun game. Turok 3 seemed to be very different, but was a lot more fun that Turok 2 and I enjoyed the game, but it wasn't as engrossing as was PD. So with these as foreshadows of what is to come I was never really looking forward to Turok.

The next game that I will talk about is TimeSplitter 2. I never played the first TS game, but the team behind it does have the development power to pull off a good game. TS 2 promises a game that will deliver the excellent multi-player game seen in TS and the to add a great single player game that the first TS was lacking. The story seems intriguing and if done right could be quite amazing, but I doubt that will happen and I think that TS 2 will turn out to be a great game and will be worth buying...unless you are someone like me who really is looking forward to an adventure game.

Now I come to Die Hard. Die Hard looks to become a Bond-like shooter like what we have seen from EA. I don't want to condemn this game, but I don't have high hopes for it, but perhaps if I ever play it I will change my mind. The graphics show that the developers know how to use the hardware and I'm sure that players will see some great things in it. I think it will be a must-have for Die Hard fans, but I'm not looking forward to it.

Lastly, and most likely the most anticipated FPS (or should I say FPA) for the GC, other than perhaps PD0, is Metroid Prime. I have to say that the graphics in this game look quite amazing and the way that the visor shows all sorts of stats is really cool. If I was looking for an FPS this is the game that I would be looking forward to. Metroid fans are sure to love this game and I would recommend it to any FPS fan. I'm sure that the adventure part will make it look and feel like a Turok game, but I think that with the guidance of Nintendo and the development skills of Retro Studios it will be much more. I would pick this FPS to be the best coming out thus year.

In conclusion I would like to say that I probably sounded very harsh towards the games and may have made them sound bad, but just remember that this is coming from an adventure fan that is desperately awaiting adventure and RPG games and that from what I have seen all of the games hold promise for all FPS fans. In short I think that FPS fans should be very happy with the FPS GC line-up.

Lammie: Honestly, Turok has never really appealed to me. I found the first two games enjoyable for about the fist hour, and I haven't bothered to even play the third. Turok never offered any real innovation in the latter two games, and the fact that it was still full of that nasty fog made it even worse. Hopefully the next Turok will offer something new, and without fog.

I don't know what to really expect from Die Hard Vendetta, all I can say is that it looks good, but I can't really say how I think it will fare up with the other (few) FPS out there.

I'm looking forward most to Timesplitters 2. Seeing it has several developers previously from Rare working on it, it should be something special. And the original Timesplitters wasn't too bad either.

I'm still waiting for Perfect Dark Zero......

Richard: I'm not the biggest fan of FPS games, though I do enjoy the classics, like Perfect Dark etc. Just bear that in mind when reading my oh so negative views.

To be honest, none of the FPS games on the GameCube have intruiged me. Although Asylum had an excellent trailer, with great music, but I need more details to get excited. Die Hard seemed to be the top choice for FPS fans, but personally I rarely find single player FPS very entertaining, the multiplayer adds so much longevity (my PD save has been played on for over 24 hours, I don't even own the game), and the lack of it could prove a big turn off for many gamers. With so many highly anticipated FPS' arriving in such a short time period, things like this could really hurt sales.

Timesplitters 2 would probably be the next choice. It's a shameless attempt at grabbing Goldeneye fans, they certainly don't hide the fact that they are ex-Rare, and it looks so much like Goldeneye I almost didn't believe it. But hey, if they do it well, no one will complain. Witha level editor and hoepfully some decent multiplayer, this, in my opinion, will be the top FPS in the short term.

The Turok franchise has been getting a little stale, and with so many FPS' on the market it needs to distinguish itself. Sure, it has the dinosaur thing, but they just end up walking round with guns like lizard-men anyway. I haven't heard much excitement over Turok, and when there is any, the topic of conversation seems to shift towards Die Hard or Timesplitters. Acclaim had better hope they aren't relying on the brand alone to sell this title. But who knows, it could surprise us.

To be perfectly honest, the only console FPS that is definately on my 'to buy' list is the sequel to, in my opinion, the greatest console FPS I've ever seen. That is Halo. Now I know it's on a rival system, but you can't deny the uality of this title. As I've mentioned, I don't get too excited about FPS', and I didn't break that tradition for Halo, until I got it home and played it. It's wowed me with it's story, gameplay, graphics, sounds, multiplayer, co-op, excellent selection of weapons, sublime vehicles. It's an acheivement as yet unmatched in the console world, and hopefully the sequel will improve on that and bring in some new ideas to keep it fresh.

Well, that rounds up another Roundtable, be sure to check back next week when we'll be sharing our views on the ECTS show.
