Feature: Cube-Europe Roundtable 20

We all play games, but could we die from them? Two people already have in the last month. So are games dangerous?

With two people already dead, is it time we realised how dangerous games can be?

Franklin: I really don't know how those guys could do it. Imagine sitting in front of a computer for 30 and 80 odd hours straight. I asume they had some drinks or food next to them but still. They must have had really dull lives to spend that amount of time play online games.

Maybe internet cafes should start putting time limits on people. And another thing, that would mean that those internet cafes where open for all that time. Do they ever close, maybe the owners should look into the limiting times and closing at night or they could slowly lose all their customers.

Pesten: Those guys must have lost something serious in life..what kind of people are sitting in front of a computer for such a big amount of time? And how the hell did they afford it (before they died)? Can't be cheap to sit on an internet café in 80 hours...
.. oh well those blokes must have had some serious problems..

Fred: Let's think about it this way. Computer games don't inspire insanity, or violence. Those guys were sat infront of screens for about 30 hours and 80 hours, right? They probably died of starvation above all else!! I mean, how can sitting infront of a computer for 30 hours kill you? Your muscles wouldn't seize up, because you'd have to move your hands a lot, and I for one shit my legs about in the chair a lot. They probably died of brain rot or something.

Games aren't dangerous, it's as simple as that.

Ash: I don't think its the games that are deadly, its the people who play them. I myself enjoy playing games, obviously, but I have common sense not to play them for 30+ hours. That is a whole day and normally for about 10 hours of that we are meant to be asleep, and other hours doing other things such as eating etc. I believe people should realised game binges are not good, similar to drinking binges.

Both of the deaths happened in Internet Cafés, I think a new 5 hour (or maybe less than that) rule should be put in place, you can have 5 hours at the maximum. Didn't the Internet Cafe workers notice that the one person was there for over 30 hours, and the other one 80+ hours! The Internet Cafés should close at some point, or at least have checked to see if these people were ok.

In the home is different, if you live by yourself they'll be nobody to tell you to come off, but maybe you should set an alarm off, or get one of those trigger switches that turn off the plug every so many hours. I think games should not be blamed, it should be the people. If this carries on, it will end up like the press blaming the likes of Slipknot, Marilyn Manson and Rammstein for deaths across the world, they dont force them to do it, and neither do games.

Ben: I would write a lot, but everyone else has said it all. If two people are stupid enough to spend eighty hours on a computer, they comitted suicide - video games didn't kill them. Japanese internet cafés need bouncers. They must be stupid not to notice that a man has been in a cubicle for that many hours.

Lammie: If you wanna kill yourself by playing games for hideously long amounts of time that's fine. I'm sure there's nerds out there that would feel that it's a perfect way to go, doing what they love in a zombified state.

Ah those Japanese, they sure are crazy.

Dennis: bwah... amateurs...
They can't even game from 30 hours without dying (should've used a cheat)

Ben: Ha! That was the funniest thing I've heard for a while.

Javid: There's more to these people than playing games too much, they're mad! None of us would ever consider going out and sniping people because we played an FPS for too long, nor would we think we could fly or hijack cars or anything you can do in games. It's a game and the highest percentage of gamers understand that. Those that don't have a few screws loose upstairs.

Conor: To call games dangerous because of this is just like calling a spoon dangerous because someone could beat someone to death with it. I really hate it when small-minded people condemn something because other people have misused it stupidly.

What escapes me is how these people could actually die the way they could. You think they would've had some sense to get something to eat or drink. And what about the staff at these Internet Cafes? Surely they would've realised what was going on, that this guy had been here for so long and then intervened. I guess not. Bottom line: games aren't dangerous on their own. But mix it with some stupid people and kablamo! You've got calamity on your hands!

Sheesh, some people, huh? Anyways, onto next week. Nintendo fined for price fixing? Apparently so, we discuss what they mean for the us gamers.
