Feature: Cube-Europe Roundtable #5

The Summer has arrived and that means sun, fun and the inevitable games drought. Find out how the C-E team will cope with the lack of games.

With no big games till September, how are you going to tide over this dry Summer?

Tim: Pikmin is definitely going to help me get through the summer, but that will not be the only game what about Resident Evil! I know it has not been released in Europe yet, but it is available in NTSC format. I will use my freeloader, which makes your PAL cube region free, and play my copy of the USA version of Resident Evil! I am guaranteed to a fantastic summer!

Also, I will have to replay the entire World Cup with Fifa's footie game! That will take me a while

Gerben: I haven't had a single day yet since the release of the GameCube that I didn't know what to play. I still need to complete Rogue Leader and of course Pikmin.

And then there's the big amount of multiplayer games, just look at the sports games. Fifa World Cup kicks some serious ass, and now that the real World Cup is almost over, that game will make up for the lack of football on tv.

If I'm tired with the sports games, I'll just switch to games like SSB: Melee, Burnout, Bloody Roar, Extreme G3 or the excellent Super Monkey Ball. Singleplayer or multiplayer, I don't care. I think there are still enough good games out that will help you through this summer. Or try to win a freeloader here and buy some import games. I heard Resident Evil and Eternal Darkness are quite good.

Conor: Well, the traditional Summer dry period is upon us. To be honest, I was expecting either Starfox or Eternal Darkness to brighten up my Summer, like Perfect Dark two Summers ago and Banjo-Kazooie two Summers before it. But I can't complain, the last months of the year are going to be hectic as hell. The lack of big releases this Summer will give me a chance to save money for the AAA games coming once Summer ends. My current Gamecube games will probably do me for a while, through the Summer anyway.

Trophies are itching to be collected in SSB Melee, I'll be trying to get more gold medals in Rogue Leader, and I'm getting Super Monkey Bll back from a friend I lent it to, so I'm going to try and complete it. I'm hoping to convince my parents to get my Super Mario World 2 for my GBA for my birthday, that would definitely keep me occupied for the entire Summer. I've also got into the Zelda games recently, I have started playing Oracle of Ages again (Excellent game!) and downloaded earlier Zelda games on my PC. So I'll be busy this Summer, no new GC games or not!

Will: Well i have pikmin and am up to the 3rd area and have all coloured pikmin. But recently i havent been playing my Gamecube that much as i have been doin exams. Now they are over im still not playing it that much. I'm in "season" where im not playing games hat much...Dont worry it doesnt last more than a couple of weeks and always happens every so often.

I personally am going to get a summer job during the holidays so that i can pay for all the games that i am going to buy when the holidays end, seen as i have so many to buy. But my solution is to get my mates to buy some of the games as they have recently just got Gamecubes.

Hold on...i'm getting that feeling....that can only mean one thing....YES...the gameless season is over....TIME TO PLAY PIKMIN.
CYA

Link: I live in Canada so Pikmin has been out for a while so you might not think that it will help me get through the summer. Actually I haven't played Pikmin too much, and not because it's not a good game, but I'm a perfectionist when it comes to games so I have to get everything and before the allotted time, so Pikmin has been a sort of challenge for me to make sure that I average 1 spaceship part per day. But before I get back to Pikmin I will be trapped in Darkness.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is coming out in Canada in less than a week and in the US in about 3 or 4 days. I will be playing Eternal Darkness non-stop and, as it is supposed to be a longer game, I might not get to Pikmin for a while.

Apart from that I can still spend time trying to get all of the levels and medals in StarWars: Rogue Leader, finishing Guantlet, and finishing Smash Bros. Melee. By the time I get bored of that it will be September and then will come StarFox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet

GamecubeGod: At the moment it seems that Melee is the only game i'll be playing until the big guns come out, namely ED, Starfox, Mario, Metroid and, of course, Zelda. This is purely because it is the most fun I can get out of my little purple cube at the moment. 3 mates over, and we're away. There's no reason to really play any other games until the end of summer, as none of them rival Melee in terms of sheer playability, fun and multi-player madness. Well, there is monkey ball.....................

Javid: I was counting on having that furry little fox on my screen over the summer, but unfortunately Star Fox has been delayed, much to my depression. So, we are left with the usual dry summer, but it isnt as bad as it seems. Of course theres the amazing Pikmin to tide time over no matter how short people say it is. Yet even i have to admit it wont last 2-3 months. So what are we going to do you might be thinking? Play. You must have a good collection of incredible titles by now and if you dont then you should consider taking a good look at whats out there. Also, get back to your wonderful little handheld, the Game Boy Advance. Im sure many of you have neglected your poor GBA since the Cube came out, so this is a time to give it the attention it deserves. The GBA is perfect for the summer too, you can take the bundle of joy everywhere with you.

Also, this is a time where you cant be too picky. There are some good games out recently such as Bond: Agent Under Fire, Spiderman and SSX Tricky. These games might not be top of the range, but they are good enough to keep you occupied. If you have the money, its worth it. If not then im afraid its the anticipation factor that will have to drag you through the summer. 'Summer', that word itself means more than gaming. Play sport, go out, have fun, in 2 months time you'll be the happiest gamer ever.

Mike: My bursting gaming collection will ensure I never get bored with my Cube this summer. Believe it or not I've not completed Luigi yet (I'm saving Bowser until I get really bored). SA2 is providing me with some adrenaline thrills - although tedium is starting to set with Rouge's 'Halloween' emerald finding level. I'm still no-where near completing Smash Bros' Melee, although I'm loving collecting the trophies. Wave Race is done and dusted but I still visit it from time to time. SMB is still fun and is worth a blast when I feel the need. Pikmin is really great once you get into it - I did have my doubts initially but it's delivering now. I can't wait for Sunshine, Resi Evil and ED - I'll be getting them on import as soon as the Freeloader is released. To be honest I can't see a real lack of games - it's only been out two months and already the Cube has a gamebase to be proud off. September is a month to watch - loads of fantastic titles are scheduled for release then. Timesplitters 2 is one of my most eagerly anticipated titles, after Sunshine, Resi Evil and ED.

Join us next time at the Roundtable, when we will look at retro games on Gamecube. Do we want them? What ones if we do? Should we demand new games instead? Find out next time.

Until then, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight.
