Feature: Eye Candy - Pro Rally '02

Welcome to a new feature at Cube-Europe, Eye Candy. In each one we'll be looking at newly-released screenshots and drawing as much information from them as we can. We know, we know, you shouldn't judge a game too much from screenshots but sometimes shots are all we have on a game or lack of released details forces us to analyse screens. In this edition we cast our eyes over Tuesdays Pro Rally 2001 shots.

-This is plainly a shot from a replay, as the camera view is too far out for normal play.
-The trees look quite tasty, the days of simple brown and green sprites on the edge of the tracks are thankfully gone.

-Dear God, If this is what the graphics are throughout the game (and I'd say it is) then this is probably the best-looking rally game I've ever seen.
-Just look at that car! Look at it! Such s*xy curves, one of the best examples of anti-alaising on any game right now. You may as well be looking at a bleedin' photo, everything on it is so clear, the number plate, the colour, the logos. Look, it's got me all worked up now.
-The snow looks incredibly realistic too, especially the light cloud being thrown up behind the car. Beautiful this screen is.
-But the lack of on-screen instruments beg the question, is this from a FMV sequence? Maybe, but you can probably turn on-screen instruments off.

-Obviously an in-race shot, note the speedmeter and time. It seems the driver has got himself into a bit of a pickle here.
-This is a strange camera angle, perhaps the screen's been taken as the camera is swinging round to accomodate the turn.
-The track is very dingy, muddy and dirty compared to the clean, crisp snow track above. As per usual, expect more varied tracks in the game.

-It doesn't take a genius to figure out that this is from the 2-player mode.
-It looks as if the graphical detail has dropped because of the extra player. Not really surprising, when you consider how good the graphics were.

What screens will we be casting our eyes over tomorrow? Well, you'll just have to come and see, now won't you?
