Feature: Mag Review - CUBE #9

We all love the net, but mags still have a special place in our hearts. Many of us grew up with them before the net came into our lives and still get them today. So we'll be looking at each new issue of the veterans NGC and the newcomers CUBE. Why aren't NOM and G-Force being included you say? Well, because I don't like them as much. It's as simple as that. NGC and CUBE are the only Gamecube mags worth buying so only they'll be included in Mag Review, as well as the talian CUBE for Italian visitors. Today, we cast our eyes over the latest issue of CUBE, #9.

The mag is fronted by Super Mario Sunshine, which is of little surprise. But they've chosen not to review it as they don't want to just "skim through it and give you impressions based on a few days-worth of play". Instead they've done a great 8-page "In-Depth" of it. There's also a great 8-page "In-Depth" of Resident Evil Zero, which is full of new info and screens. Wrestlemania X8 is also given the in-depth treatment, but by now we all know it's pretty crap.

There's also a brilliant free gift. You know that black bit on the front of your Gamecube that says "Nintendo Gamecube"? Well, you can take it out and replace it with a Rogue Leader, Super Monkey Ball, Luigis Mansion or Mario Sunshine themed ones. They really do look great.

News features an aptly-named "The Calm Before The Storm", all about the HECTIC months that will follow this summer drought. Just look at all those great games shoe-horned into four months. Sonic Mega Collection, Barbarian and the Spaceworld cancelation are also in News. "Up Front" contains the latest screens and info on Timesplitters 2 and Super Monkey Ball 2.

"Act Your Age" is a great look at the "Gamecube is for kids!" argument, featuring Gamecubes "mature" games with different looks at the argument. It's all in vain of course but nice all the same.

The main review is of the eagerly awaited Eternal Darkness, in which it certainly gets the score four years in development deserves, Capcom vs SNK 2: EO also gets a good review. But Jeremy McGraths Supercross, Zoocube and red Card Soccer don't. All the usual Tips, Peripherals and Guide (Agent Under Fire) are present.

Overall, the issue is a great one. Some great features and previews of big games make for some enjoyable reading, even if the issue does feel a bit thin in places. Worth buying, definitely.
