Feature: Public Roundtable #10

You get a say on gaming's most important issues.

What on earth are publishers thinking? They starve us from Easter and over the summer and then hit us in the pre-Christmas season with this savings-decimating cannonball. With successive waves of quality games, surely only the seven richest kings in the world can keep up (name that source people)? Us mere humans, meanwhile, will probably have to make some cuts. But what if you had to cut it all down to just one game?

If you could buy just one game in the pre-Xmas rush, what would it be?

Monopolyman:

Halo 2...

But as this is for Gamecube games only, I'd have to say Paper Mario 2, partially because I didn't play the original on the N64, but mainly because in the preview I read in NOM; it looked fantastic. All the places and all the things Mario can turn into is cool. Can't wait!

Animal Crossing gets a close second though.

RudeAndAmusing1:

"These are truly going to be Gamecube's best games!"

Hmm, that's a difficult one. I suppose it would have to be Metroid Prime 2 for me. The problem is I'm more stoked about the games that are out next year to be perfectly honest. Zelda and Reisdent Evil 4. These are truly going to be Gamecube's best games! To be truthful I'm more excited about Burnout 3 than anything else. But unfortunately that isn't coming out on Gamecube is it? Damn you Criterion!

L0rdPain:

I'm not buying a new game until November (well, maybe Pikmin 2) just so I can buy Paper Mario 2, Tales of Symphonia and Metroid Rrime 2 when they come out. If I had to choose, it'd probably be Tales because of the length of gameplay, although I would probably want Metroid too.

pelican:

"Pikmin 2 overshadows the rest by a country mile."

While I'm looking forward to some RPG action in Q4, with ToS and Zelda on Players' Choice, it's the Japanese obscure titles which are most exciting me. Viewtiful Joe 2 looks to expand on the merits of its predecessor and I can't wait to play as Silvia. Although these games have me nearly wetting myself with excitement, Pikmin 2 overshadows the rest by a country mile. Louie and the new pikmin look fantastic, the introduction of two player action will be brilliant and the graphics have been given a good facelift. Can't wait.

A popular choice. Obviously

Cube_Chris:

"Fair play to Capcom for making the sequel and taking the risk many developers are not willing to do."

I would have to choose Viewtiful Joe 2, as I loved the original, and the second seems to be more of the same good solid fun of the first, with the added extras of the sequel! Fair play to Capcom for making the sequel and taking the risk many developers are not willing to do, and create a new original title (VJ1). The only hitch I have is how the Co-op will work with the VFX?

ptwizzy:

If I wasn't an import gamer I'd be salivating at the thought of Tales of Symphonia. However I have to say that Paper Mario 2 gets my vote simply because I'm having somewhat of an RPG fetish right now, and I never played the original so it's all new to me. Mario - in an RPG. Can't wait.

Fighter of Foo:

"They seem to have their heads in the right place and know how to make good games."

It'd have to be Second Sight. I'm a big fan of Free Radical as they seem to have their heads in the right place and know how to make good games. I'm also interested in the story of the game. NGC magazine said the story is one of the best in recent games, so it intrigues me to see it for myself. They also said it was addictive, and I enjoy addictive gaming, so it's all looking good for it at the moment.

Luckily for me they've pushed the release date forward and it's out!

You just know this'll be good

HeadlessHaven:

"Now with Pikmin 2 I will be able to explore and enjoy the world at my own pace and really have some fun."

Very tough one this, as I began to type I was sure I was going to say Metroid Prime 2. But now I have changed my mind, I really want Pikmin 2. Just because it looks so magical and seems to have a wonderful sense of personality. I really loved the first game but hated the 30 day time limit, but now with Pikmin 2 I will be able to explore and enjoy the world at my own pace and really have some fun. So sorry Samus even though I can't wait to continue your adventure I am off to the land of the Pikmin.

TeamSonic0916:

"The multiplayer is a surprise for the final, so I'll have something besides single player to look foward to."

I want Metroid Prime 2 the most. I got the U.S Metroid Prime 2 demo disk, and that brought up my anticipation for it from "Very good" to "EXTREME" and plus, the multiplayer is a surprise for the final, so I'll have something besides single player to look foward to. Just hope that they don't screw it up.

Mike_D:

"I'm really looking forward to seeing how the multiplayer turns out."

Thank goodness I don't have to choose only one game to get this Winter - there are so many coming out that I'm desperate to play. For the purposes of this discussion, though, if I DID have to choose only one it'd have to be Metroid Prime 2, after the original impressed me so much. I can't wait to see how the storyline progresses, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the multiplayer turns out. Paper Mario would come a close second, though.

Now the good gets better

babooo:

The one game I would buy would be Pro Evolution Soccer 4. That would keep me busy all year. But for Gamecube it would have to be Paper Mario 2. The graphical style of game is just amazing. It looks superb!! It's from Nintendo so you could expect something of high quality here folks.

Shorty:

"I'm trying to completely avoid all screenshots and info on it."

Metroid Prime 2 definitely. The first is one of the few games on my GC that I've gone back to repeatedly, I'm back near the end again for about the 10th time. I'm definitely looking forward to it, probably would be even more if it wasn't for the fact that I'm trying to completely avoid all screenshots and info on it.

I may have picked Tales of Symphonia over this, but I just bought that. It's on it's way.

Zelda_Rulez:

"I really like RPGs and there's not many of them on the GameCube."

That's a difficult choice. I'd have to choose between Paper Mario, Tales of Symphonia and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. I think out of those three I will buy Tales of Symphonia because I really like RPGs and there's not many of them on the GameCube.

And with all the great reviews it has gotten it could be one of the best games available on GameCube.

It's also supposed to be a really long game so it will also keep me occupied for a longer time than Metroid and Paper Mario. However Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is a really close second choice and I'm really anticipating that game as well as Paper Mario.

foofly:

"Intelligent Systems always do good Mario RPGs."

Paper Mario 2 is a definite, I'm playing through Mario & Luigi's Superstar Saga, and I'm loving every second of it. Intelligent Systems always do good Mario RPGs. Metroid Prime 2 will also be awesome. Um... I played Halo 2 at Game Stars Live and didn't think much of it, humm, maybe. Half Life 2 is a must! I've played the leaked code. This game will be brilliant. There. Oh and Wario Ware if it's still 20.
