Feature: Public Roundtable #16

You get a say on gaming's most important issues.

Maybe it's because humour is so objective, maybe it's because violence and fast cars sell more games than wit, or maybe it's because years of being conditioned to American sitcoms has left humanity a dry and humourless race. Well, maybe. Whatever the reason, there doesn't seem to be as much humour in games as there used to be. Still, let's not moan, eh? What kind of gamers would we be if we just complained all the time...okay, fair enough. I'll just stop. Here's your damned question.

What games do you find the most humorous?

Hellfire:

"I also laughed a lot in Enter the Matrix..."

Conker's Bad Fur Day is probably the most humorous game I ever played, it's a shame few people got to play it. Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga and Paper Mario can also induce some laughs.I also laughed a lot in Enter the Matrix with an irritating little tune that's constantly repeating itself. Oh, I laughed a lot at first, but after a few minutes I wanted to wash my ears with acid. I think humor is (or at least it should be) a very important part of videogames, it's like adding another layer of fun into a game.

Darv:

"Listen To The Doctor is the funniest thing with your mates (especially when everyone's had a bit to drink)."

Wario Ware is absolutely hilarious. Plenty of times I have just laughed out loud at all the crazyness. And Listen To The Doctor is the funniest thing with your mates (especially when everyones had a bit to drink).

Being a big Simpsons fan I thought Hit and Run had some pretty funny moments. Pikmin 1 and 2 are quite funny at times and some of the things they say in Animal Crossing have me in stitches.

Hyrule:

Donkey Konga can be - watching how bad other people are!

Mike_D:

"I'm hoping Paper Mario 2 is going to carry on the tradition of funny Mario RPGs."

Back in the days before I got into Nintendo, I used to like all the Lucasarts adventure games, like Monkey Island and Grim Fandango, which had hilarious scripts.

As for Nintendo games, Wario Ware and Mario and Luigi on the GBA are great, and I'm hoping Paper Mario 2 is going to carry on the tradition of funny Mario RPGs, and become the number 1 comedy game on the GameCube.

L0rdpain:

Space Quest 6 (most hilarious narrator ever), Grim Fandango and Monkey Island 3: Murray the talking skull "WATCH ME AS I STRIDE THROUGH THE GATES OF HELL!" "Stride??" "OK, ROLL, ROLL THROUGH THE GATES OF HELL.... MUST YOU TAKE THE FUN OUT OF EVERYTHING?".

Of course, how could I forget, Leisure Suit Larry 7.

Monopolyman:

I agree with Darv on Wario Ware. Oh how I laughed at the randomness and bizzareness. I also found Fable hilarious, when you go around punching people at the start. [You, sir, have a warped sense of humour.]

What do you mean it was supposed to be a serious game?

Hero-of-Time:

"The phrase 'You fight like a cow' is a classic."

There have been many funny games on various consoles but the few that stick out in my mind are Monkey Island series, Jak and Daxter and of course Conkers Bad Fur Day.

Monkey Island has that kind of American/Sarcastic style humour and of course the phrase "You fight like a cow" is a classic

Jak and Daxter has the Disney style humour. While Jak stays silent you get a giddy little character in Daxter who throws out all the one-liners but also flirts with being annoying.

Conker's Bad Fur Day...Ah what can be said about this underrated N64 classic. This game was pure toilet humour and was all the better for it. It was like watching an episode of Bottom. The Great Mighty Poo song, bouncing on the flower's breasts, the Matrix scene and the dark humour of the Saving Private Ryan beach landing was all done beautifully. FUNNIEST GAME.....PERIOD! Lets hope that they don't change too much for the Xbox version!

D-cubed:

"The phrase 'You fight like a cow' is a classic."

Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie are great examples of videogame humour. It doesn't take itself seriously at all and features some unforgettable characters, from the sarcastic and witty Kazooie to the pathetic and charasmatic Klungo. It's also funny because it pokes fun at the stereotypical structures and devices that are apparently used in most videogames.

-Jack-:

Metal Gear Solid, for the way it constantly rips the piss out of itself.

"Don't dare use an autofire controller. I'll know."

British humour...ever the most subtle comedy

erling:

"Armed and Dangerous... the cut scenes are pure gold...."

Well for the GameCube.. hmmmm.. Link being shot out of the barrel in Wind Waker from the pirate ship.. and again.. Conker

But the biggest laugh I had in ages over a videogame is Armed and Dangerous... the cut scenes are pure gold....

In one scene they try to save the "freezing" professor.. but stuffing him into a dead warm animal.. they use a hole that is already in the animal.. from birth... and by the way.. the animal was just sleeping.. ass they find out..

n3ss:

"They never getting into actual combat however, because they're either to drunk or arrive much too late."

The original Z (by the Bitmap Brothers) was very funny. It's a basic RTS (in the command & Conquer style) from the mid-Nineties, but incredible funny. It's set in a war between two types of robots (red and blue) and both sides control such (infantry) units as: Grunts, toughs, psychos and more. None of those robot units are particularly smart but Grunts, as the name suggests, of course are really dumb.

Each of the cutscenes follows two robots (a Grunt and a Psycho) as they move from one battlefield to another. They never getting into actual combat however, because they're either to drunk or arrive much too late.

From a more recent date: Conflict Zone (by Ubi Soft), again a RTS, was hilarious.

Fighter of Foo:

"So funny when they fly about all over the place and end up in a funny position on some railings."

GoldenEye. The guards are hysterical, especially when they get blown up.

Freedom Fighters. The ragdoll physics make the enemies fly about all over the place with an accurately thrown grenade. So funny when they fly about all over the place and end up in a funny position on some railings.

I basically like seeing people fly when they get blown up. Tis much-o fun-o. [Hmm, do you know Monopolyman?]

You know what game I found hilarious; Where's Mario? I mean, Nintendo go and put their biggest superstar in the title, a seal of quality and integrity, a promise to the reader that this game is worth buying. Hoo, I tell ya, I was fooled! Crazy Nintendo. If you have less traumatic experiences with funny games, post them below. And be sure to stop by the thread for next week's edition here.
