Feature: Public Roundtable #5

You get a say on gaming's most important issues.
Just like everyone has their favourite sandwich filling (I'm a chicken man myself), favourite cartoon show (gotta be The Simpsons) and favourite film (Lord of the Rings - take your pick) gamers have their favourite game genres. One of my mates is an absolute RPG diehard, while the other won't touch anything but sports games. So what genres do our forum members dig?
Which videogame genre is your favourite, and why?
Menomin Monster:
"They may be full of tired clichés but I really don't care."
Give me a RPG any day. There's just something special about trying to level up on grand dragons in FFIX when you're around level 15, not even allowing the Heart of Valmar to get off an attack in Grandia II, or just the thought of being able to destroy the final boss of FFX in one attack. Granted they may be full of tired clichés but I really don't care. I don't think taking your band of unlikely heroes and heroines to save the world will ever grow old for me.
rokhed00:
"I'd have to say FPS."
I'm into most types of games really (except for RPG and RTS), but if I had to choose a favourite genre I'd have to say FPS, although I do love a good driving game. To pin it down to a single game would be a bit trickier as there has been so many good ones over the years; Timesplitters 2, Goldeneye, Quake, Halo, they're all great games.
EEVILMURRAY:
"I'd have to say action/adventure."
I'd have to say action/adventure. There's something that fills me up with adrenaline when I see a group of enemies harass some poor villager or something and I'm running towards them with my sword preparing for some hardcore beatdowns. This can be done with RPG's but its more drawn out as you normally have some text to go through before a battle and a nice regular battle scene.
This, again, can be done with first person shooters but I like to see myself doing it, rather than from the perspective of the character I'm controlling. Metal Arms and Hitman are good examples because you have your weapon, you can see the enemies round the corner and wait for the prime moment before running out all guns a blazing. But I find guns impersonal and like to get stuck in with a sword or other close combat weapon.
Fighter Of Foo:
"Hybrid genres can be especially entertaining."
I like most genres, but hybrid genres can be especially entertaining. I like having freedom to be able to do whatever you want, whenever you want, that's why I'm a big fan of the GTA games. I also like games that just let you live a life in the game, like Animal Crossing and things like that. But you can't beat mowing down enemies with swords or a Gatling Gun, so action adventure games are possibly my most favourite genre.
Mike_D:
"It's all down to whether the game itself is any good."
I wouldn't say there's any particular genre I like more than others - it's all down to whether the game itself is any good. Normally I'd say I don't like first person shooters, but I love Metroid Prime, and even though sports games aren't my thing, I'll be getting Mario Golf soon. I always have, and I still do, like platform games (although I prefer 2D ones), and racing games like F-Zero and Mario Kart can be fun, too. And then there's the 'genre-less' ones, like Animal Crossing and Wario Ware.
It's like films, really - there's no genre I'd say I really love. Movies from any genre can be good, be it comedy (Austin Powers), action (The Matrix) or horror (The Ring).
Hellfire:
"Just as long as the games are good, bring 'em on!"
The only type of game I'm not into is sports. I don't really like racing either, but I love Mario Kart and F-Zero though. I love RPGs, but nowadays they're losing quality. But I suppose I prefer adventure games over any other genre, but that would be because of Zelda. Just as long as the games are good, bring 'em on!
CodeName_88:
"Nothing can beat jumping around Delfino Plaza or beating Wario World."
Platforming games. I really enjoyed Zelda as an RPG, but I really can't enjoy D&D games (except KOTOR). So it has to get to platforming. Nothing can beat jumping around Delfino Plaza, or beating Wario World, and GBA titles such as the Mario Advance series and DK Country.

Hmm... a favourite?
Well, it's hard since I'm more of a all genre kinda man, but right now I'd choose multiplayer action RPGs (like Secret of Mana, Shining Soul, Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance, PSO etc). Or any action RPG where you can co-operate, it's great planning how to beat the boss together, or just splitting the profits of a dungeon raid. Or just making sure everyone get's the best equipment for their character class and fighting style. In short: They are a blast!
That's all for this week's edition. Be sure to check out the Gamecube Forum for the next topic, and your name could be here next Saturday. Didn't contribute? You can still post your favourite genres below.
