Feature: Staff Roundtable #106

The C-E staff give their views on gaming's most important issues.

You may not have noticed it, but it's Christmas tomorrow. It's a nice time of the year, when people of all religions come together to celebrate the birth of Santa...or something. Of course, for gamers it really only means one thing: booty. Of the videogame variety of course. So what presents would the CE staffers like to find under their tree tomorrow morning?

If you could get one thing from Santa this year, what would it be?

Justin:

"It is the greatest thing... since... well.... the beginning of videogames."

Ahhhh, the all to easy question of what I want from Santa. That would most definitely have to be the one and only Nintendo DS. It is the greatest thing... since... well.... the beginning of videogames. That is my solid opinion though. I have played it in the stores, and I have read all about it, and I know for a fact, it is a must have.

Jordan:

"I wish he could bring me back to Christmas '98."

Hmmm...I know what he could bring me, even if it wasn't possible. I wish he could bring me back to Christmas '98. You know what happened then? Zelda OoT, I just wanna go back and be awed by it again. Nothing has moved me like that game, apart from a few other exceptional ones. Ahhh to be a child again...

Mike C:

I agree with Jordan... Legend of Zelda: OOT was the sweetest game... I rememeber skipping school the day after I got it :)

But this year POP2, Metroid Prime 2 or a DS would give me a similar joy. I've still got my eye on RE4 and The Matrix Online. I've been really good Santa.

Kalpatron:

Well-well! That's a tough question. I'd like a box that will contain a DS, a PSP and loads of games!!! It's only one thing, ho-ho-ho...

Ash:

A good sit down to chat with Shigeru Miyamoto about all things from games to doodling (okay so maybe a translator will need to be there as well).

Of course I'd prefer other non-videogame things and sorry if it's too short.

Iun:

"You can get two fantastic classics for the price of one new game, and in the long term, it's much more entertaining!"

Oh-ho-ho! Devilish laugh.

Just like a lot of my colleagues here at Cube-Europe, I'd quite like a DS and ALL the games that you can get for it.

BUT, what I'd like more than anything else is a big box filled with all the Players Choice titles.

Why? Well, it's simple: over the course of the past few years, there have been some absolutely cracking titles released for the Gamecube, and now most of them are available for the low-low price of 19.99 in stores across Europe. The reason I'd like them is that over the past few years I've part-exchanged several of these titles to get the newer games, much to my long-term charging.

But now, with great games like Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX and Mario Sunshine in this cheap range, you can get two fantastic classics for the price of one new game, and in the long term, it's much more entertaining!

Tom:

"I would love to be able to to fill in some of the glaring omissions in my games collection."

Of course, I would love a DS, or a couple of days with and access-all-areas pass at Nintendo.

But more realistically, I would love to be able to to fill in some of the glaring omissions in my games collection. I haven't got Eternal Darkness, and have never even played more than a few seconds of Resident Evil. I haven't got Pikmin 1 or 2. If Santa is really good to me this year I reckon some of those games that I really should have will be in my collection.

Dominic:

"I've had a quick go on it, just to make sure it works and has no dead pixels on it."

Ah it's that time of the year again, where Santa empties his sacks for little boys and girls. And what is he getting me this year? Well I'm getting a Nintendo DS, that's what.

I'm excited about the system. I've had a quick go on it, just to make sure it works and has no dead pixels on it. I can say come Christmas day I will be playing on this little beauty with Feel The Magic and Mario 64 DS.

James:

Well, I have a DS (so there!) and so my ideal videogames related gift would be either a PSP (couldn't say no to a free one!) or to interview and have my DS signed by Shigeru Miyamoto. T'would be sweet as a nut.

Lammie:

Are you gonna hate me if I say I want a PS2 with GTA: San Andreas and Gran Turismo 4 (yes, even if it hasn't been released.....I can't wait). Too bad. That's what I want.

Please send hate mail to the usual address.

Oh, and a DS.

Wouter:

"I guess the perfect gift Santa could give me would be a time machine."

Well, I wouldn't want Santa to give me a PS2; that would only mean I have to spend even more cash on games, can't have a console without a decent amount of nice games.

I wouldn't mind it if he'd give me a handful of 'Cube games though, the new Prince of Persia looks nice and Donkey Konga is still on my need-to-have list. A DS with Mario 64 DS and Wario Ware DS would be great too of course, but I guess the perfect gift Santa could give me would be a time machine. It wouldn't even have to be a big one, just big enough for Resident Evil 4, Wario Ware Twisted (or whatever they're going to call it over here) and the new Zelda game to be zapped back to the present, can't wait for those games...

Dennis:

"A puzzle game described as 'addictive as popping bubble wrap', now who wouldn't want that?"

Probably Hitofude for the Nintendo DS. The game, best known in all non-Asian countries as 'One Line Puzzle', looks pretty addictive. A puzzle game described as 'the next Tetris' and 'addictive as popping bubble wrap', now who wouldn't want that?

Conor:

"Honestly, it's just astonishing. And this is all from just the demo."

A DS is the obvious answer, but I'm going to buck the trend and go with Half-Life 2. I got a new graphics card just three days ago, and to christen it then spent an agonising ten hours downloading the demo of the game. Even just with the demo, I think it is the game of the year; it's certainly the most impressive thing I've played in a long time. Atmospheric, well-designed, clever, scary as hell, and with a tremendous new physics engine to boot. After loving the original, it felt great to get my trsuty crowbar back and whoop some zombie ass. Honestly, it's just astonishing. And this is all from just the demo.

That's what our staff would like to get tomorrow - what about our readers? Post below.
