Feature: Staff Roundtable #47

We've all got our favourite genres, find out which one tickle our staff's fancy and, more importantly, whether or not Gamecube is dishing out the goods for them in that respect.

How has your favourites genre(s) been represented on Gamecube?

Phuzzy: For me, it's been a mixed bag.

I'm a somewhat modern RPG-er. None of that ye olde this and that (unless of course it's an FF game) so with Lost Kingdoms I'm afraid I was not exactly bouncing with excitement. Phantasy Star Online v.1&2 was good, but to get the best out of it you had to go online, which is not an economical option for me to partake in. However, with FF:Crystal Chronicles on the way, I'm looking for something new and different. And I hope it is as good as I have expected from the series.

Though I must admit : my favourite genre is changing. Super Monkey Ball has made me love puzzle and party, whilst Zelda and Mario has given me a passion for action and adventure and even Burnout has reved the driving genre in me. And on a final note, my PS2 has done no such thing.

What a wonderful console the GameCube really is.

Lamsh: This is a pretty difficult question, because I first have to answer another question before I can think about this one: What is my favorite genre? I'll try to answer them both.

As for which genre is my favorite, I love playing games that involve exploring, puzzling and fighting, I don't really care in which genre these elements are combined. It can be a platformer (Mario Sunshine has a lot of exploring and puzzling), an RPG (Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will have a lot of exploring and fighting I hope), an adventure (Zelda and Metroid Prime both were full of all three elements) or just a good fighting game (Smash Brothers and Soul Calibur 2 are great). The platformers and adventure games get a lot of attention on the Cube now, RPG's are left behind a bit. Luckily they are catching up now, with Skies of Arcadia just out and Crystal Chronicles coming up, but the genre still isn't as well represented as it was on the SNES and is on the PS2 now. That's why I also have a GBA SP, which does have a nice selection of RPG's, and will have an even better one once Sword of Mana and Mario and Luigi comes out.

I guess the short answer is that combined with my GBA, my Cube is more than able to keep me gaming on a regular basis.

Link: I would say that my favourite genres have been represented pretty well on the GameCube. Although Zelda is really the only adventure game out right now, StarFox Adventures was still a solid game and it had its moments. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (although not exactly an adventure game) helped tide over my adventrous side with an amazing story and great gameplay.

As for RPGs, though only a few are out right now, I'm sure we'll see some great ones soon. Skies Of Arcadia Legends was a fantastic game and the upcoming Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and Tales of Symphonia are going to be great aswell.

So, I guess, so far my favourite genres, though haven't had a lot of games, have gotten quality games. Other great games such as Metroid Prime add interesting flavour to genres that are not my favourite and it is that mix that I like about Nintendo.

Bas: The Cube covers most of the genres I'm interested in. Time Splitters 2, Zelda and Ikaruga are one of the best in their genres. Not to forget genre-breaking games like Pikmin, Metroid and Super Monkey Ball! There are however still three genres in which I would like to see some games. First, the Cube lacks a good rally game. I did a preview of V-Rally 3 recently, and though this is a good game, I prefer a more realistic racer. A game like Colin Mc Rae Rally 3 would be more than welcome. The second gap in my Cube line-up is a soccer game. Fifa and ISS are all we have. It's a shame Pro Evolution Soccer 2 has been cancelled. Third, I'd like to see a Grand Theft Auto type of game. Unfortunately, the genre still about consists only of GTA, so we'll probably won't see this anytime soon.

Kevin: Well really by favorite genere is Team Shooters like Desert Storm and very sadly that is the only decent one out at the moment. But theres a few planed for later this year like Raven Shield and Desert Sabre.

Dominic: I like most genres, but if I had to pick one that I think I would enjoy the most, it would be RPGs.

So far the Gamecube doesn't really have any RPGs, lets be honest its probably the most weakest part of the Gamecube's selection of games; the only new RPG is Lost Kingdoms, which was decent but not exactly AAA RPG standards, Skies of Arcadia Legends is good, but its still not new, its a port of a Dreamcast game with added things,

In the future though there are a couple of RPGs that seem to be shining with greatness; Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles really could be some serious fun in multiplayer and also the fantastic looking Tales of Symphonia. And not forgetting Monolith Software, creators of Xenosaga are also bringing a RPG to the Gamecube, which I am really looking forward to see what it is like.

Conor: My favourite genres are adventure games, and I am gradually warming to RPG's, which I think are represented alright on Gamecube. Zelda along would satisfy my adventure hunger (such a fine game), but there's also Eternal Darkness (which was pretty good) and the two Resident Evils, which I thoroughly enjoyed playing, as well as staring at. They made for some sleepless nights, I have to say. I had big hopes for Starfox Adventures, which left be underwhelmed. On the RPG front, I am loving Skies of Arcadia at the moment and am thinking about purchasing Lost Kingdoms or it's sequel. Plus there's Final Fantasy, Tales of Symphonia and others to look forward to. Good times.

I'm also a sucker for first-person shooters, which aren't faring up quite so well on GC. Timesplitters 2 was great fun, but it was no Goldeneye. Die Hard Vendetta was alright, nothing more. Despite this, XIII is getting me pretty excited (as you can probably tell by my preview) with it's unique style, and there's always Geist and Red Faction 2 to look forward to. Still, none of these compare to Half-Life (which PS2 owners can happily enjoy) or it's sequel, a game I'd give my right leg to have on Gamecube.

Other than these, I don't really have any preferences with genres, as long as it's good!
