Feature: Staff Roundtable #64

In the recent days we have reported on a price drop for Gamecube in America, Australia and Europe. With a lack of mainstream killer-apps this Christmas (although current owners will be getting some real treats), will lower prices be neough?

Will price drops be enough to save GC's Christmas season?

Bas: A lower price will lead to higher sales, which is of course a good thing as Nintendo still has many Cubes in stock. If the Cube will be considerably cheaper than its rivals (though the XBox and PS2 are usually bundled with some games) it will attract two groups: people who do not yet have a next generation system (and want one but at an affordable price) and gaming fanatics who buy several systems. A problem could be that both these groups may not be very big, so in that respect a price drop may not help sales that much. I still think it's a good move though. The already produced Cubes should be sold anyway and Nintendo should take any opportunity to expand their userbase, also with future Nintendo systems in mind.

By the way: 'save' Nintendo's Christmas? With F-Zero, Mario Kart, Pikmin 2, Rebel Strike and Viewtiful Joe my Christmas doesn't need to be saved!

Pesten: Probably not. I mean, most of the people who want/wanted a Cube (or another system) have already bought it. And I think there is just about to few of those fanatics to save the xmas.. Looks like Ninty's a bit too late. But what the hey! For all we know, unexpectedly all cubes in stock will be sold out and everyone will be happy! Who knows?

Ok.. I'm not fooling anyone..

jayseven: If Nintendo do what they've never really done before then who knows what could happen. The next 3 months are choc-a-cloc with games of high quality so now is an ideal time to start an agressive advertising campaign.

LOWER THE PRICE AND LET EVERYONE KNOW ABOUT IT NINTENDO!

Matt: I don't think the Cube needs saving, With a price drop it would mean that a console that runs Viewtiful Joe is more cheaply available.

But... we're nearing the end of this console generation's war and so I don't see many, if anyone, buying one this Christmas will have it as their sole console system. The Cube has something truely great going for it, I just hope that shines through. It's a real shame that the general public are on the most part completely uneducated when it comes to computer games.

Link: It depends on where you are. In North America, the combination of a strong software line-up and the price drop very well may result in strong sales. The software lineup alone (including Mario Kart and Metal Gear Solid) will be able to satisfy the classic Nintendo fan and will likely hook a new audience.

In Europe, on the other hand, I wouldn't expect too much. The price drop will only get parents looking for the cheapest buy. I wouldn't expect that the price drop alone will be enough to start a boom in GameCube sales. Expect a large post-holiday increase in sales, though, as that will be when the blockbuster titles will be released in Europe.

Tim: In some parts of the world, yes. I think in America the GameCube will sell extremely well with the price at 99 dollars and with Mario Kart as a key title this christmas. In Japan, I think the Cube will also do very well. There the release of Baten Kaitor will make a very big difference together with Mario Kart. In Europe I think sales will be OK but not astounding. I think that is because the marketing stratgey of Nintendo of Europe is lacking here and there. Also, it is said by some Nintendo representatives that the GameCube price will not be lowered in Europe. I think we will just have to wait and see, but in general the Cube will definitely do better than last year's christmas. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and all the other key-titles like 1080, Star Wars etc will shift hundreds of thousands of Cubes! No, I don't think I am being to optimistic

Javid: Well it'll help but I dont think the extra aid is entirely required. Okay, so things have been grim and there have been many a failed xmas in Nintys history with holding back games untill Easter and the like but I think this time around weve got a great line up with some enticing sequels and returning classics so Nintendo enthusiasts will be overjoyed and the general public shouldnt be too upset either, in fact seeing familiar faces plastered everywhere this winter should help shift Cubes let alone the price drop though that is added incentive of course. Besides its far too hard to predict such things, you just have to see how it goes, the forecast looks promising in my eyes though.

James: A price drop can only be a good thing!

Low Price + Great Xmas Line-up = Loads of Cubes sold!

With a low price, GC will sell like hot cakes. And with the great Xmas games, what could go wrong?

Conor: Unlike some of my colleagues, I am far more pessimistic about this. But I'll save that for this Wednesday's GameOff.

What do you think? Will price drops compansate for the lack of a crowd-puller this Christmas?
