Welcome to VC Weekly, N-Europe's guide to the wonderful world of Nintendo's download service. Written by Sam C Gittins.
It's a one game release this time around, it seems Nintendo is realising that it needs to get a few more of the average games out there in-between the bigger releases that everyone wants, still one more release for the VC even if it is average. Anyway enough from me and on with the erm... game!
Available for download this week we have...
- Yoshi's Cookie
Points: 500
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Bullet-Proof Software
Released: 1992
System: NES
Yep, another Nintendo puzzle game but unlike classics such as Tetris and Dr Mario this is a bit different as instead of having falling blocks you are faced with a block of biscuits, more pieces are gradually added to the field and it's up to you to make rows of them so that they disappear.
Execution is simple, you put the cursor on the cookie and then press the action button with the d-pad in the direction you want them to move; either up / down or left /right basically. If a cookie reaches over the top or the side it will then appear on the opposite side if not cleared and this formula continues until you've cleared the stage.
Thats basically it... visually it's functional, audibly it's fine, theres a two player mode if you so wish to play it with someone else (if they are willing to) it offers a reasonable challenge but isn't really as addictive as other greater puzzle titles.
If you can wait, there is a superior SNES version which features an extra mode as well as vastly superior aesthetics and audio. So the choice is yours but if you want to download it then it may entertain you for a short while, so it's only really if you have points to spare or some fond memories to relive whilst wearing those rose tinted spectacles which somehow always manage to make games like this seem just that little bit better.
Verdict : In biscuit form this is a plain digestive; edible and enjoyable but nothing more.
Thats it for another installment of VC Weekly which will return again soon. So until then, enjoy the rest of the week and Game On!
