Throwback Thursday #10 - Muscle March

fit1roOCM45N6QW8AAAKWpIt’s been over 6 years since the wonderful day that I first clenched my muscles and chased a bunch of men in tight pants but I remember it like it was yesterday.

Muscle March for WiiWare released in Europe in March 2010 and Japan in the May of 2009 and tasks you with striking a pose to squeeze through a bunch of broken walls.

Originally starting off life as an arcade game that never saw the light of day, Muscle March eventually morphed into this wonderful WiiWare party classic.

The game consists of three areas with three levels each, coming at you with an ever increasing pace and difficulty. At the start of each level, a thief will burst in and steal your beloved protein powder before darting off. As a bunch of protein lovers, you and all your muscly pals will line-up and embark on the chase of a life-time. After a lot of posing you’ll eventually make it to the front of the queue of muscled racers and that’s when you get your chance – prompted with a running icon, you’ll have to feverishly shake the Wii Remote and Nunchuk in a running motion to catch the protein thief.

The gameplay is about as simple as it gets, with a small selection of poses to pull before the run at the end, and the game itself is really just a camp and over the top version of Hole in the Wall – But that’s what makes it so great. You won’t be playing this game for hours on end, but it’s hilarious to watch, a lot of fun to play and the perfect game for parties.

I’ve had so much fun with this title with friends over the years, and the last level is actually incredibly hard despite the simple gameplay – you need reactions of a Super Monkey Ball trained heart surgeon and the running skill of Sonic. It took us months to finally beat what we’d call ‘Guy with the Majestic Blue Ass’ but when we finally did, we felt like we were in heaven.

This game is brimming with charm, from the little bird nestled in an afro to all the wacky things to see in the chases. The Dreamcast-era graphics make my heart melt and the music is stuck in my head years after playing the game.

I was quite into Japanese games at the time such as Taiko No Tatsujin so I got this on its original Japanese release and of all the titles I ever thought would get released in Europe, this certainly wasn’t one of them.

The controls can get a bit iffy in the more fast-paced stages as the positions you have to put the Wii Remote in to pull off the poses are quite specific but they’re not jarring enough, and don’t happen often enough, to hinder the experience much.

As a single player game, you probably won’t see the appeal, but as a bit of cheap fun between a bunch of intoxicated friends I can’t think of anything better.

It’s been a good years since I played this title, but just for N-Europe, I’m willing to try my best against Guy with the Majestic Blue Ass just one more time.

I played the first two worlds and recorded them for N-Europe whilst getting a beastly workout in the process - I also completed World 3 that takes place in Space but... it's up to you to discover that for yourself on WiiWare! Until next week, NICE MUSCLE!!
