Game Details: Lylat Wars
Andross has launched an all-out attack on the Lylat System, and only Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team stand in his way. Jump into your Arwing fighter, Landmaster tank or Blue Marine sub, and blast Andross’s forces into atoms!
Battle through 15 varied levels of air, space, land and undersea combat. Discover hidden paths in forward-scrolling missions and switch into All-Range Mode for full 360-degree manoeuvring missions, performing wild aerial somersaults and daring U-turns to shake off the enemy.
Star Fox 64 also features a VS. mode for up to four players to battle it out in three thrilling game types: Point Match, Battle Royal and Time Battle.
Original N64europe review
To start with an explanation for the non-European visitors of this page, Lylat Wars is the same game as Starfox 64. For some dumb reasons Nintendo couldn't use that name in Europe so they renamed is to Lylat Wars.
Andross has attacked the Lylat star system once again and Fox McCloud is asked to save the planets (and the people who live there of course). A good guy as he is, Fox will help 'm and he and his friends Peppy, Slippy and Falco get their Airwing to blow Andross out of the sky.
Lylat Wars features 20 (!) different levels, in most of them you've got to fly and shoot the enemies down, but in some levels you've got to ride a tank to blast up everybody. On the end of each level, there's an end-boss, and after you've defeated him you can get to the next level. But that isn't the only way to get into another level, if you do a certain thing while flying/riding around, it's also possible to get to a new level. For example, if you save Falco in level 1, he'll guide you to a secret exit, if you don't save him you just have to complete the level in the normal way. This makes that it'll you take pretty long before you've seen every level, 'cause it isn't very easy to find the secret exits.
The graphics of Lylat Wars look great, and since this game uses the Rumble Pack (which was included with Lylat Wars), the look and feel of this game is even bigger. This game is very detailed, f.e. when Fox speaks you can actually see his mouth move! The sounds are also very cool, there's only one sad thing about it and that's when you choose to let the Fox-team speak "Lylat" (normally they speak English) it sounds like rubbish. In the SuperNES version their voices were very weird and funny, but now it sucks. When you let them speak English, they sound like they should sound (i.e. just normal). With the gameplay there's also nothing wrong, it's great just like the rest of this game!
If you don't like shooting around in the levels anymore, you can challenge one of your mates in the multi-player mode, but sadly enough this isn't as good as the normal mode, it just isn't much fun. If you play this with two players, the screen is still split in four different parts, not in two parts like in Mariokart 64 or Waverace.
As expected, Nintendo brought out another winner with Lylat Wars, and this is one of the games that are in the list of "must have".
