Re-Volt

Game Details: Re-Volt

Race RC cars on N64

Original N64europe Review

Remember those good ol' days where you and your friends held races to see who had the fastest radio-controlled car? Well, Acclaim gives you the opportunity to do that again with their latest race game Re-Volt.

Something went wrong at game-factory Toy-Volt, because their radio-controlled cars have gained minds of their own, and they escape so they can race in the real world. About 28 cars explore the world with all their weapons, shooting at each other and using power ups to be the fastest. Sounds fun huh?

Now let's talk about the details of this game. There are several modes, of course you can just race on your own, but also against friends, and another multi-player option is battle mode. The coolest option is the track editor, in which, yes you guessed it, you can design your own tracks. Because of this option, you can keep on designing tracks endlessly, meaning that it's pretty hard to get bored with this game because of the tracks. Unfortunately, there's another reason to get bored with Re-Volt, and that's because of the gameplay. It's really difficult to control those cars, and one of the most important features of a race game is that it should be easy to steer. I kept swearing when I was racing, so after a while I quitted and challenged my brother for battle mode. I don't know which option is worse, normal racing or battle mode. In battle mode, it's just almost impossible to find your opponent and to hit him, none of us ever really got to beating the other one.

I think it's really a shame that the gameplay is so bad, because the graphics just look great. The sound is ok too, so what a great game this could have been.

On the overall, I think you won't be playing Re-Volt for a long time. Only the track editor is really cool, but then again, those poor controls. Well, you can't have everything, I'll just wait till World Driving Championship comes out in Europe.
