Original N64europe review
First off I would like to say that Robotron is one of those games that when you play it it seems to take you back in time to the 80's when this game was first introduced in the arcades. I wasn't old enough to remember it but games like centipede where comming out. There is not plot to this game just to shoot all the Robots in each level and try and rescue as many people as you can in a level to gain points. The more points you have the more lives you get. They gameplay is fun and addictive, and will keep you hooked for a while. There are also power up's in some of the levels such has a shield, flame thrower, Gas gun, ect. Even though this game is rated teen it doesn't have anyblood or body parts flying around in it. Just robots comming up and beating on you when you die.
Gameplay: The gameplay is fairly simple just kick all the robots butts in your way and advance to the next level without dieing. There are lots of power-up, I told you a few before. There is also a two, three, and four laser weapon. Some of the robots/monsters can spit of projectiles that come after you. Some look like brains and even a mother brain that look like they came out of a sci-fi movie. There are some robots that you cannotkill and go around eating people that you are trying to save. They are a pain in the neck so you have to run around and get the people before they get them and eat or sqash them. The game starts off very easy around 50-75 level you start to feel the game really pick up and it starts to get alot harder. The controls can be set to lots of different things. One of my favorites is to move in with one controller and with controller two shoot. I also like to have my brother have one controller and I have the other.
The music is very retro, but it is good ok if you don't like retro. There are an assortment of beeps and squaks that come out of the robots when they come and when you kill them, and then there are yelps and screams when the people you are supposed to save die. There is basicly no voice in the game escept in the begining, but I can't understand it. I thought the music could of been more like Extreme-G but the music in Robotron is just fine.
Graphics: The grpahics are "great" but I can't see how you can put them in a game like this and make it look any better then what it already is. The guys are made up of blocky polygons with nice shading, but when you are blasting them away you really can tell the difference. I thought the battle feilds could of been better done. Like have some hills or something. Also the back grounds are a little blah. There are enough camera angles to keep you busy though there are four in all smart, arena, overhead, and third person. The close up version is pretty cool but is too hard to really see anything. Over all the graphics are nice for this sort of game.
Overall: If you like retro games, or game that keep you glued to the screen for a while with nonstop shoot-em-up robot fun then get Robotron. Ignore the graphics they are nice for this type of game, and the music is cool. If what you have read sounds cool to you then buy it. If it doesn't it would be a good idea to rent it first, but I am pretty sure you will like it.
