Wave Race 64

Game Details: Wave Race 64

Ride your Kawasaki jet ski to victory against fierce rivals and tumultuous waves. This is one of the defining racing games of the Nintendo 64 as its impressive physics showed a new kind of experience that could only be possible with 3D game engines.

Even today, its original take on racing, with buoys to pass from either their right or left side and a power-up system rewarding skilful racers, remains a fun and fresh challenge to enjoy by yourself or with a friend.

Original N64europe Review

Get your ass on a jetski and speed away with the first racing game that appeared on the N64. I don't know if you've ever "driven" a jetski, but believe me, it's very cool and you should do it at least once in your life. Nintendo probably thought that as well and 2 months after the N64 hit the stores they released their fifth game: Waverace 64.

Waverace 64 is a racing game, but now you don't race in a car like in normal racing games, now you race with a jetski. Waverace features four different modes to race:

  • Championship: finish first at all 8 levels to win the gold.
  • Time Attack: get the fastest time at each level.
  • Score Attack: perform stunts to get points.
  • VS Mode: race against your friend.

There are only four different characters to race with, all with their own qualities, and in Championship you race against "all" of them, but in VS Mode you can sadly enough only race against each other, the other two racers don't dare to race or something.

Waverace has excellent graphics, the waves look very real, which makes the look-and-feel of this game great. The challenge is pretty high as well, at the first levels it's easy to win the gold but it will take you a while to complete the later levels. The sounds though are very bad, the comments are annoying and the music sucks.

Although the graphics of this game are very good, and the gameplay is great, I still stopped playing after half an hour, and after three or four days I didn't like the whole game anymore. Nintendo should have given Waverace much more options, more characters and more levels, then it would have been a perfect game, but now it's only a good game to rend from your local videostore for a couple of days, it's not worth buying.
