Animal Crossing finally loses its crown in Japan, but 3DS sales rise

Animal Crossing: New Leaf has finally been knocked off the top of the weekly Media Create charts, with a flurry of new releases displacing Nintendo's supply-strained 3DS life-sim.

There was a surprisingly high appearance for a Wii game - Bandai Namco's latest Taiko no Tatsujin title proved what a popular series it remains. Decent too was the first week for Level-5's hotly anticipated Professor Layton Vs Ace Attorney, although the publisher will be hoping sales remain high throughout Christmas for the high-profile and heavily-pushed cross-over. However, the top spot was reserved for the latest in the Super Robot Wars franchise.

A brace of Vita games also represented the strongest week Sony's handheld has enjoyed in a while.

Here's the full software chart for the week of November 26th to December 2nd.

The week's hardware chart is the last before a new challenger enters the fray. Wii U launches in December this Saturday, meaning next week's update will feature the first two days of the new platform's life. Looking at this week, it also looks like that will be when Nintendo 3DS surpasses the life-time sales of PlayStation 3 - a feat it will have managed in under 22 months.

Sales for Nintendo's handheld rose this week, and though it looks primed for a great Christmas, it should be noted that sales this time last year were tracking higher. It would suggest that matching last year's explosive performance, which was fuelled by the almighty trinity of Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and Monster Hunter 3 G, will be one achievement too far.
