Charts: Latest Japanese Software & Hardware Sales

Japanese DS sales hit a significant new milestone in the week ending February 11th.

Courtesy of Media-Create, we have the most recent sales figures from Japan.

Software sales were led off by the PS3 incarnation of hardcore fighting favourite Virtua Fighter 5. Though it took the top spot, Sega likely expected a bigger debut - this is a problem third parties will be forced to confront until the PS3 install base catches up with expectations. The only other new game in the Top 10 came in the form of DS strategy RPG Luminous Arc. With so many of publisher Marvelous Interactive's DS titles achieving moderate success (as with recent release Harvest Moon: The Island I Grew Up On), it is no wonder the company has chosen to center its development effort on the DS.

Also in software sales news, Wii Sports has gone platinum. Hopefully it marks the first of many Wii million-selling titles.

The week brought about a significant milestone for the DS. Hardware sales for the week pushed combined Japanese DS numbers over 15 million sold, a feat achieved in roughly half the time it took for the PS2 to sell through the same figure. Additionally, this week the DS may very well surpass the total number of GBAs sold in Japan.

As a last point of interest, Wii sales YTD (at just over 600k so far in 2007) are approaching PS3 LTD numbers (at roughly 640k since launch). Consider this no more than amusement however as the "next-gen" market has yet to play itself out.
