Charts: Latest Japanese Software & Hardware Sales

After one week in the Wii's shadow, the DS storms back to the top in the week ending December 10th.

Courtesy of Media-Create, we have the most recent sales figures from Japan.

The week marked the notable debut of Microsoft XBOX 360 "saviour" Blue Dragon, an RPG developed by Mistwalker (a new developer largely comprised of former Square-Enix personnel). The game did well by Japanese 360 standards...which means it sold through over 80k units. Perhaps this will serve as another minor footstep for Microsoft in Japan, but for a title developed from the ground up for the Japanese market the reception would seem a little underwhelming.

The DS was again strongest in software sales, led by the Pokemon machina as Diamond/Pearl marched onwards towards a combined 4 million-sold milestone - a feat the games will likely reach by the end of the year. The Nintendo Wii maintained a couple of strong chart presences, neither of which was The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess which came in at 17th as the Wii's third best-selling title for the week. For many westerners, this would seem a peculiar fate for a game with the pedigree of Zelda. Perhaps Link's latest adventure will prove a steady seller in the months to come.

In hardware, the DS Lite reclaimed the top spot on an avalanche of sales that rivaled the Wii's debut week. Remember, this is all before the big DS news of the week. Wii or no, the DS continues to steamroll along; expect the Lite to be the holiday season's biggest winner for a second consecutive year.
