Charts: Latest Japanese Software & Hardware Sales

Final Fantasy scales the top of the charts again...this time for PSP. Meanwhile the DS and Wii continue to roll in Japan for the week ending May 13th.

Courtesy of Media-Create, we have the most recent sales figures from Japan.

The Final Fantasy gravy train continues to roll for Square-Enix as their two latest efforts in the famous series easily won over the minds and pocketbooks of Japanese handheld enthusiasts. After reigning at the top of the charts for two weeks, Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings was finally displaced by the PSP's Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War, an update of the Playstation classic. Fans can rest assured that there will be plenty more coming: S-E's recent company event featured no less than 8 titles bearing the FF flag. By the end of the year, the DS alone will see Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Final Fantasy IV (the remake) and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates.

Apart from Final Fantasy, DS and Wii software continued to power the Japanese software market. Particularly shocking (only not really) was the resurfacing of DS quadruple platinum hits New Super Mario Bros. and More Brain Training. Right in line with big hardware sales boosts due to Japan's Golden Week, it is clear that a high percentage of new DS Lite owners chose to partner some of the nation's favorite games with their slick handhelds. Nintendo has certainly had the golden touch as of late with practically all of their DS efforts in the past year going on to sell well.

Hardware sales for the week registered a sharp drop-off from the previous two weeks...an expected development with the conclusion of Golden Week. The key figure however was 8,839...as in the number of PS3s sold in the period. A new benchmark low for Sony in Japan, we have to now wonder not only if a price drop is imminent, but whether it would even be enough to generate any momentum for the PS3. Only killer software can jump start this stalling beast...and that software is still months off.
