Sales for the week ending November 20th show a strong bid by the PSP falling just short yet again of DS numbers. Meanwhile, a new Pokémon hits Japanese handhelds...
Courtesy of Media-Create, we have the most recent sales figures from Japan.
The week saw a massive spike in PSP sales thanks to Sony's release of a "Gigapack" configuration that included a 1 GB Memory Stick. Nevertheless, driven by the release of Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon, DS sales responded in kind to lead the charts for the 31st consecutive week. Next week's charts will reflect the impact of Animal Crossing DS in the Japanese market, with the system very likely to receive another sizeable boost in response to a game that has proven popular in the past and has been well received by media outlets.
The week's console numbers follow:
No. | Console | Week Sales | Last Week Sales | Year Sales |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Nintendo DS | 65,341 | 48,342 | 2,146,479 |
2 | PlayStation Portable | 58,898 | 31,078 | 1,603,228 |
3 | PlayStation 2 | 21,102 | 19,277 | 1,631,863 |
4 | Game Boy Micro | 9,140 | 9,151 | 346,330 |
5 | Game Boy Advance SP | 6,822 | 6,143 | 602,441 |
6 | GameCube | 5,661 | 4,368 | 176,609 |
7 | Game Boy Advance | 249 | 227 | 22,726 |
8 | Xbox | 141 | 119 | 11,520 |
On the software side, overall sales saw a healthy jump, perhaps a good indication that the brisk holiday season has begun for the market. Although top honors went to the latest PS2 Gundam game (surely not a surprise for anyone who follows the charts), the new Pokémon themed titles in the popular Fushigi no Dungeon (Mysterious Dungeon) series started off with a bang. Pokémon Mysterious Dungeon features versions for both the DS and GBA, and both proved popular to the ever-eager pokemon fanbase despite seriously different gameplay mechanics. Rounding out the DS software presence, while Bandai's surprise hit Tamagotchi Corner Shop finally dropped out of the Top 10, the seemingly ubiquitous Brain games continued to draw in new customers (coming soon to a region near you.)
The Gamecube again had its lone Top 10 representative in the form of Mario Party 7, carrying over its successful launch last week with continued solid sales. For next week's software charts, look forward to hearing plenty about Animal Crossing - the online-enabled DS game is rumoured to have already sold over 300k copies in pre-orders. Also of note: a Brain Training sequel is right around the corner as well. Its likely safe to expect that title to garner a healthy following upon its December release.
