Disney to close LucasArts

Mega-corporation Disney has announced that it will be closing publisher and developer LucasArts, as it signals its lack on intention to develop future Star Wars video games.

With its internal studios closing, and development staff laid-off, Disney will instead license out development of Star Wars games.

The future of LucasArts first seemed unclear when Disney acquired LucasFilm and the rights to Star Wars for a massive $4 billion - the company stated at the time that it saw the future of Star Wars games in the social and mobile space rather than on consoles.

The closure means that games in development by LucasArts, including the high-end Star Wars 1313, have effectively been cancelled.

LucasArts, which would have turned 31 years old next month, also developed such classic adventure games as Grim Fandango and the Monkey Island series.
