While it is technically possible for two Wii U GamePads to connect to the same console, no Wii U game has so far utilised this feature, with multiplayer leveraged by using Wii Remotes or the Wii U Pro Controller.
However, cooking deep in Nintendo's creative ovens are games that make use of two GamePad's, general producer and legend Shigeru Miyamoto has told Polygon.
But if you wanted to see games that take on that feature to its full potential, we may have to wait until Wii U approaches Wii levels in terms of many households having controllers.
"With regards to the two GamePads functionality, from a gaming system standpoint we are developing games that will have that capability. In the future, perhaps when we get closer to something that, an environment where everybody or a large majority of people would have two GamePads, that might be a time where we look at how we can leverage a system of that nature."
With the NFC-enabled, touchscreen controller being one of the most expensive single components of the Wii U package, the difficulty of putting the GamePad to market by itself is likely one of the main reaons Nintendo is instead waiting for more controllers to be naturally distributed to the market via console sales.
