E3 2005: Revolution to Utilize Standard-Sized DVDs

"Sleek" system will use standard-sized DVDs, is full movie playback to follow? UPDATE: Wireless Controllers!?

Another small corner has been lifted on Nintendo's Revolution blanket. In comments made today, Nintendo revealed that the unit would be set horizontally and sport a tiny form factor, with a width of about three stacked DVD cases, or not much more than an inch.

In the words of Nintendo of America's own Perrin Kaplan, the Revolution will prove to be "very, very sleek". Further comments brought to light Nintendo's choice to have the Revolution utilize standard-sized DVDs, unlike the specialized discs used by the Gamecube. Nintendo did not comment on whether or not the system would include full DVD movie playback capabilities.

Today's comments join previous hints such as Revolution's backwards compatibility with Gamecube, its high-definition capabilities and its wireless internet focus. Slowly but surely, the Revolution is starting to materialize and take shape. More than ever, Nintendo fans await E3 and further details.

UPDATE: Folks, there seems to be a bit more to tell. Nintendo's Next-Gen machine will reportedly wield wireless controllers as well...yes, like the XBox 360, and more importantly of course the wonderful Wavebird.
Secondly, although some are saying Perrin was misquoted, it is looking like DVD playback is in the cards. Just to clarify, today's announcement did indeed also reaffirm High-Definition support and the fact Revolution will "emphasize" online play.

UPDATE 2: Apparently, Nintendo has made an official post on their website regarding the recently revealed Revolution details. In addition to the information listed above, the article also states that the Revolution will be able to be situated vertically or horizontally, in the same fashion of the PS2 and now the XBOX 360. Additionally, the article goes on to state that "thanks to Nintendo's hardware development partners IBM and ATI, the small system will be packed with power that will enable it to wow players with its graphics", and mentions that the unit will utilize a "self-loading" drive, which some have speculated to mean the Revolution will have a disc load slot instead of a motorized tray.

Finally, the article ends with the teaser that there is "much more to Revolution that will be revealed over the coming months, but the combination of its compact size, wireless Internet, backward compatibility, quick start-up time and quiet, low-power operation add up to the start of a great game system."

As always, stay tuned gamers. E3 is only a weekend away.
