E3 2005: The Zen of Iwata

The show may be over, but there remains plenty to talk about. An interview with Satoru Iwata offers some perspective.
The 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo has served to give us all a glimpse into what we gamers can expect to see and play in the next year. Most notably at this year's show, the first major next-generation volleys have been exchanged by the industry's Big Three, and everyone has been left scrambling to make some order of it all.
Nintendo shocked just about everyone by not shocking everyone with all the heavily anticipated, fantastic details of their next-generation strategy. Despite the negative spin some folks could put on their decision, an important point remains clear: Nintendo has a plan. It can be felt in the confidence of their most prominent faces: from Reggie on to Perrin Kaplan down to the ever-so knowing and enthusiastic Shigeru Miyamoto, and of course all the way at the top with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.
American publication "The Seattle Post-Intelligencer" Friday posted an interview they conducted with Mr. Iwata in the midst of E3, and while it reveals no new and earth-shaking details (besides confirmation that indeed, the Revolution will be using controllers afterall) it offers great perspective into Nintendo's way of thinking. I particularly liked this excerpt:
Q: The general perception is that Nintendo appeals to a younger audience. Will you try to embrace that, expand upon it, or move away from it in the next console generation?
Iwata: First of all, I've never once been embarrassed that children have supported Nintendo. I'm proud of it. That's because children judge products based on instinct. Everyone wants to appeal to people's instincts, but it's not easy. That doesn't mean we're making products just for children. We believe that there's interactive entertainment that people in their 60s, 70s and 80s can enjoy, so we're doing various things.

Nintendo has a plan, and it will be interesting to see how everything unfolds from here. We at C-E will certainly be on hand to share everything with you just as it comes to us.
