E3 2005: Zelda DS To Feature Solo Link?

Word has it DS Zelda will not be based on The Four Swords...

Recent accounts have revealed a juicy detail about the development of the DS Zelda game. In an interview with Game Informer.com's Billy Berghammer, Eiji Aonuma (Nintendo's director of all things Zelda) remarked that Four Swords was not currently in development for the DS. This is counter to previous hints and speculation, much of it stemming from comments made by Aonuma himself regarding the DS' optimal setup for a game like Four Swords.

It doesnt end there, however. Aonuma confirmed that a Zelda game was indeed in development internally at Nintendo, leading one to believe that it will be an adventure game in the same vein as the main-series Zelda games. No details on the game's style were mentioned, although the DS has certainly proven capable of pumping out nice 2D or 3D visuals.

It is also very interesting to point out that although Capcom (in conjunction with Flagship) has handled the last three original Zelda handheld adventures, the most recent of which was last year's excellent Minish Cap for the Gameboy Advance, this new DS Zelda will indeed be an internal effort by Nintendo. One can only speculate just what form this new game will take, and surely many Four Swords fans will hold out hope that the game will eventually come to be realized on the DS. Another possiblity is that if the DS Zelda does indeed take on the form of a full-blown adventure game, perhaps a special multiplayer Four Swords mode would be included, much as it was with the GBA re-release of Link to the Past.

Speculation aside, more details will hopefully be forthcoming in the last day of the show.
