E3 2006: 100 More DS Games In 2006

Nintendo have promised their handheld would get 100 new games by the end of the year, and showed off some of them. Many were new titles: Starfox, Yoshi's Island 2 and Diddy Kong Racing DS, anyone?

Hoping to add their already stellar DS sales (16 million in 18 months, in case you missed it), Nintendo showed a video reel of forthcoming games for the system. Some of the titles were already familiar faces to gamers - New Super Mario Bros., Mario Hoops 3-on-3, Big Brain Academy, Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass and Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam - but several were being shown for first time.

Specifics were, unfortunately, not forthcoming afterwards, so there's little to go on so far.Yoshi's Island 2, from the glimpse we got at it, looked every bit the successor to the SNES' classic colourful adventure, with the DS' touch screen used to aim and shoot Yoshi's eggs. Diddy Kong Racing, one of Rare's finest, is getting a DS update too, in a game we come only label as Diddy Kong Racing DS. Starfox joins the revamp trend, in the flying shooter we would expect.

The Pokémon franchise is getting another spinoff, in the form of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. Dungeon eschews the normal RPG gameplay of the series, as casts you as the Pokémon themselves. You'll have to interact with others of your kind. Additional details weren't given. Another sequel/update was Mario vs. DK: March of the Minis - expect many similarities to the GBA original. A more obscure title was Elite Beat Agents, which appears to be the Western version of male cheerleading game Ossu! Tatakae! Ouendan!. Nintendo's distinctive Touch Generations line will receive additions too.

Hopefully playtime on the show floor will reveal more about these latest entries to the DS release list.
