E3 2006: Day Two Report

It's strange to see all those lines in front of the eight DS pods with New Super Mario Bros playable. Not that New SMB is a bad game, or anything. I mean, this game is coming out here in a few days in the US and in two months in Europe. Shouldn't the curiosity of people in this title be tempered by now? Sure doesn't look like it. I've got to admit, running and jumping around with Mario is as fun as it was decennia ago. Although graphics have changed over the years, the feeling is still the same.

Remember running to the flagpole at the end of the level? Trying to reach the highest spot achievable or jump over it, if even possible this all is still attractive after all those years. The new power-ups fit perfect in the overall game. The 'grow mushroom' is kinda exciting, with green pipes, blocks and enemies flying all over the screen. I was sceptical on forehand if this would look out a bit out of place during actual gameplay, but I guess even the original Super Mario Bros would've looked great with this item in it.

The rows in front of New Super Mario Bros are even odder when you know there's Zelda: Phantom Hourglass playable on the other side. The line with people waiting there isn't extraordinary big, especially when you compare it to the ones on the other side. Two different Zelda DS demos are playable this time. A multiplayer one, where players try to catch each other in turns, and a single player demo which gives quite a good look what this title got to offer. Both modes showed that this game probably will keep the Zelda quality bar up high.

Starfox DS got me worrying about this franchise. Aiming at hostile objects with your spaceship was a hard thing to do, because of the lack of an aiming circle. The controls work quite the same as in Metroid Prime Hunters. The left shoulder button fires the ships weapon. With the touch screen you can steer the ship in the direction you desire. The graphics are pretty basic up to this point, also the range where you're allowed to fly is rather small giving you that 'claustrophobic' feeling you see in some games. It seemed like Starfox DS is lacking the right atmosphere.

This is a thing I can't say of Yoshi's Island 2! Everything that made the original Yoshi's Island so good plus some extra elements are packed in this title. Although the new elements are rather rare, and level design looks not to differ that much from the original game, a new edition of the best platformer ever is never a bad thing. New elements include a change between babies. Baby princess for example can hold an umbrella to float to higher places using the wind. And just like in New Super Mario Bros the old feeling is still standing. 2D Platform fans should have a great year with the DS.

I haven't even mentioned other games I played on the E3 floor, like Final Fantasy 3 (looking incredibly sweet), Tony Hawk Downhill Jam (can be a great success online), Mario vs Donkey Kong 2 (better than its predecessor) and DK King of Swing DS (even worse than its predecessor?!). More on these and other titles shortly.
