E3 2006: IGN Interviews Perrin Kaplan

More hardware suprises to come, says Nintendo's VP of corporate affairs and marketing...

Nintendo editor over at IGN Matt Casamassina has interviewed Kaplan on the E3 show floor (literally), and asked several questions we wanted answers to. Speaking on the release date/price non-announcement, Kaplan stated that Nintendo was not a "follower" - so just because Sony revealed their date, that was no reason for Nintendo to do likewise. She did say, however, that "we'll let you know soon" - referencing the mystery summer briefing other Nintendo execs have hinted at.

What information was revealed at the conference was carefully picked by Nintendo, she said - and consequently tried to skip Matt's question on if more hardware suprises were in store. "Yes, next question!" she replied, before being pressed to reveal more. "Let's just say hardcore gamers should keep paying attention to us," she commented mysteriously.

It was for the hardcore gamers, she explained, that the Smash Bros. announcement was kept for a little while later in the show. She said she thought the conference was good anyway - shorter than the others and more colourful. She admitted she hadn't been told of any other 3rd Party characters in Smash Bros., though they are likely.

The possibility of demo-pods in retailers was talked about, though nothing is yet confirmed. A worldwide launch across the Americas, Europe, Japan and Asia and Australia is what Nintendo are aiming for. The Wii's marketing plan is currently being put together. It's likely the Zapper and Classic controllers will be sold separately, with the Wii-mote and Nunchuck provided in the box with the Wii - though no final decision had yet been made. Extra Wii-motes may also be available separately. She also confirmed Nintendo were finalising the Virtual Console's structure and business model.

Sounds like Nintendo still have more suprises up its sleeve, while Sony have already blown their load? Watch the interview yourself here!
