E3 2006: Sony Reveal PS3 Tilt Sensitive Controls

Breaking: Sony have shocked the gaming world by including tilt sensitivity in the standard PS3 controller.

After beginning the conference with a dig at Nintendo for developing a "gimmick", leader of the dark side Ken Kutaragi took the stage at Sony's E3 press conference, and revealed a completely unexpected secret from up his voluminously evil sleeve - motion sensors in the PS3's new controller - DualShock 3. Gone is the boomerang device shown last year to much derision - in its place, a standard DualShock shaped controller, apart from the fact it can sense six degrees of movement with no external sensors required.

Just moments ago, the PS"Wii" controller was revealed - being apparently lighter than the PS2's normal controller, wireless, and "a fantastic innovation" due to the included tilt controls. The device was used to tilt and lift items on screen by moving and tilting the controller on the X-Y-Z axis, and by sensing pitch, roll, yaw, and lateral motion. No full games were shown to use this feature, suggesting it was added late in development.

Concluding the conference, it was announced the system would launch with a choice of a 20GB or 60GB hard drive. In Japan it will launch November 11th at 59,800 yen for the 20GB edition and an open price for the 60GB one, meaning retailers can set their own price. The American, European and Australian launch will be November 17th for $499 for the 20GB and $599 for the 60GB in America, and 499/599 in Europe (translating to 341/409).
