Nintendo have announced a new entry to the Super Mario series for 3DS at this year's E3 conference.

Introduced on stage by Reggie Fils-Aime, Super Mario 3D is a new adventure for everyone's favourite plumber. Game play looks like a mix between 2D and 3D Mario games. The trailer featured side-scrolling platforming like we've seen in the recent New Super Mario Bros, as well as 3D game play very similar to Mario 64 and Galaxy.

Super Mario 3D also looks like it'll be paying homage to Mario's illustrious past throughout the game - the video on screen showed classic power ups like the racoon suit and a level featuring Paper Mario.

Concrete details were hard to come by but expect Super Mario 3D by the end of this year.
