E3 2011 Breaking: Wii U Announced

Nintendo's next console is called 'Wii U'.

Nintendo's next console aims to include everyone, as mentioned earlier, and as such it is named Wii U.

They also showcased the controller and it does indeed look like a tablet with a screen built in. They advertised the fact that you can switch between the TV and controller.

You are also able to draw on the controller and project it into the TV, play games such as Othello and more. The control will use motion control but unlike the Wii you hold it towards the screen and it works as a separate viewing port.

Video calls will also be available as well as using it as a web browser. You can easily share data between the two by sliding on the screen towards the TV.

The controller can also be used to display information on, meaning you can play a game so just the action is on screen and the menu is on the bottom.

It is backwards compatible with all Wii games, controllers and accessories such as the Balance Board.

The controller contains a camera, gyroscope, accelerometer, speaker, microphone, 6 inch screen, control pad, circle pad, buttons and several shoulder buttons.

Satoru Iwata also stated that in spite of some similar characteristics the controller is not intended to be a replacement for the 3DS.

Games can either be played in high definition on the TV screen, on the control screen or across both.

Developers can decide whether to use the TV, controller or both and it is entirely up to them. Mr. Miyamoto spoke about his eagerness to use these new possibilities and is excited about the new features and ways to play.

Eight interactive demos will be playable on the show floor, although Nintendo points out they will not be actual games but rather an example of what to expect.
