E3 2011: Reggie Interview Summary

Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aime gave a few insights into the Wii U on GameTrailers this evening.
The Nintendo boss was interviewed barely half an hour after the E3 conference had ended. He wouldn't give away much, but gave some explanations about the name, p
He said that Wii U was "utopian" and would provide something for everybody, "for U". He also insisted that the system would bring Nintendo into the High Definition age and its online system would be comparable to the Playstation Network and Xbox Live.
Reggie revealed that the controller's touch screen would be single touch, not multitouch like many smart phones and tablet PCs. He reinforced that this was a gaming controller, not a tablet.
Fils-Aime refuted suggestions that the Wii was not a hit with core gamers, saying that sales figures show that it was popular across all demographics. He said with the Wii U, horsepower will no longer be an excuse for developers.
Although footage from games like Batman: Arkham City and Dirt was shown in the conference, Reggie said that this was from the PS3 and 360 versions of the game, with the release of Wii U not until next year.
More details of the new console will be discovered throughout the week, but there will be no mention of release date, launch titles or pricing. He said the console would be sold for a "competitive price" and provide "fantastic value" for what is included.
One thing that may disappoint many is the news that Wii U will not upscale existing Wii games into HD resolutions. The backwards compatibility will work in a similar way to the Wii and 3DS for Gamecube and DS titles respectively.
There will be a developer's roundtable later this evening and more Wii U details throughout the week so stay tuned to N-Europe for the latest revelations of Nintendo's next generation console.
