E3 2011: Shigeru Miyamoto Q&A

Find out what the legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto has to say about Wii U.

As fans and journalists are busy trying out the new Nintendo Wii U CNET took the opportunity to speak to Shigeru Miyamoto about the console.

The discussion focused on the new console, although the 3DS is touched on a little, and sees Mr. Miyamoto discuss the influences behind it, what it means for the future of the industry and his opinions on the iPad.

When asked how he feels about the iPad and the inevitable comparisons that will arise Mr. Miyamoto notes that the Wii U controller is not designed to be taken everywhere with you, unlike the iPad, but Nintendo wanted to allow you to carry on playing video games anywhere in the house. He is also quick to note that Nintendo are focusing on entertainment with the Wii U while the iPad is designed to be a computer on the go so their intentions are actually quite different in spite of the iPad's popular app market featuring many gaming apps.

According to Shigeru Miyamoto the idea behind the Wii U is similar to the one behind the Wii - constant connection that is instantly available. However, while they intended to do this with the Wii's Connect24 service Nintendo began to notice HDTVs taking longer and longer to boot up so they decided to "create a dedicated screen just for the system so people can quickly and instantly interact with it, regardless of what was happening on the TV".
