E3 2011: Wii U Controller Resolution Cracked?

Nintendo's innovative Wii U controller is arguably the most important part of the new console, but just how good is the screen's resolution?

While Nintendo has not divulged official technical specifications for the screen in the Wii U controller, the guys over at Golgotron (via Nintendo-Universe) think they have calculated the precise resolution it will provide.

By essentially manually counting the number of pixels on available promo pics of the device, Golgotron placed the screen to be approximately 870 pixels wide. After some logical re-estimation, they reckon the actual resolution to be 854 x 480 - a wide-VGA display which is a very common resolution.

Golgotron noted that WVGA is not quite as sharp as QHD (aptly named for being about a quarter of HD), which may have been more handy when it comes to streaming high-definition Wii U games on the controller. However, general consensus at E3 seems to be that the screen quality of the controller is decent nonetheless.

Obviously, this is nothing more than semi-informed speculation, and it's likely the controller will get plenty of re-tweaking before the Wii U package is finalised next year, so stay tuned.
