E3 2011: Wii U Could See You

Satoru Iwata states that facial recognition could be possible with Wii U.

The newly unveiled Wii U controller contains a front facing camera that will allow for video conversations but according to Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata it could also be used in a number of other ways.

In the new instalment of Ask Iwata focusing on the new hardware Mr. Iwata states that "from an engineering standpoint that the camera will recognize you if you position the new controller to look at you," suggesting that facial recognition may be included in the retail version. Games such as Nintendogs + Cats already feature facial recognition so it would not be Nintendo's first attempt at it.

Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto gave the example of using facial recognition for Wii Fit, as that was the title they were discussing when the topic came up, and noted that it could be possible for the controller to recognise your face and display your stats and graph without the need to do anything or even switch on the console.

Hopefully facial recognition will play a part of Wii U in the future and developers will find interesting ways to incorporate it.
