E3 2015 - Key announcements and games round-up

Another year, another E3 gone as quickly as it came (although the Nintendo Treehouse team will be showing off games tonight and tomorrow). We've provided you with a handy summary of all the announcements, games, and dates that formed Nintendo's offerings for this year.

Wii U

Jumping straight in to the headline game, Star Fox Zero for Wii U finally got its fancy premiere. Co-developed with the team behind Bayonetta 2 at Platinum Games, Star Fox Zero will seemingly focus on the single-player campaign, with a conspicuous absence of online multiplayer. Still, if there's anyone who can deliver a faithful and spectacular Star Fox experience, it's Platinum Games and Shigeru Miyamoto.

WiiU StarFoxZero scrn08Star Fox Zero utilises the Wii U GamePad in more creative ways than recent first-party offerings too. Firstly, you've got optional gyro controls, so you can steer your Arwing just like how you would in real life. Secondly, the two-screen advantage gives players a 'cockpit view' on the GamePad where you can aim and fire, and a more cinematic, zoomed-out view of the entire field of battle on the TV screen. Star Fox Zero will launch some time towards the end of 2015.

Also given vague 'holiday 2015' release dates are a few more new Wii U games. Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash is the sixth(!) Mario Tennis game to date, and seems to add a twist on previous entries by including traditional Mario power-ups, like the size-enhancing Mushroom. It all looks very hectic. A more sedate new title is Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, which, of all the crazy cross-over ideas, seems to blend the world of Animal Crossing the party board-game gameplay of Mario Party. On the other end of the extreme is confirmation of the Japanese horror title Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. Eek.

A more tangible release announcement was the news that Xenoblade Chronicles X will finally come out this December. No more specific than that at this point, but we did get a sweet new trailer.

Coming somewhat sooner will be Super Mario Maker – the build-your-own-Mario-levels game. It made a spectacularly hilarious appearance at the Nintendo World Championships, so we're pretty stoked that we're getting it on September 11th, complete with a 100-page booklet of creation ideas.

Slightly after that on September 29th will be an interesting new collaboration between Nintendo and Activision. The popular Skylanders series – forebear to Nintendo's amiibo range of toys-to-life products – will be getting Nintendo cameos with Skylanders Superchargers. The colourful action game will ship with specially-made Donkey Kong and Bowser figurines; technically amiibo but fully compatible with the new Skylanders game on Wii U and 3DS, throwing the two iconic Nintendo characters in to the mix.

And speaking of amiibo, there were also reveals of Isabelle, Tom Nook, and Mabel figurines, all compatible with Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, a range of Animal Crossing amiibo cards, and an 8-bit Mario amiibo, which will be compatible with Super Mario Maker.

Finally, whilst there was no room for The Legend of Zelda, we did get a 2016 Wii U game in the form of Genei Ibun Roku #FE – the working title of the Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem crossover. We got a new trailer, which suggested the game may be the very first to earn the 'JPop RPG' genre label.

3DS

On 3DS, there was a somewhat more surprising line-up of titles. Later this year, we'll be getting Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer on October 2nd. The fashion and item collecting simulator will also be compatible with the Animal Crossing amiibo cards. Shortly after, in November, everyone's favourite house-cleaning miniature robot will be back in Chibi Robo: Zip Lash.

The brand new, big 3DS title for 2015 was The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. The game looks to be a cross between A Link Between Worlds and Four Swords, in that it has the visual style of the former and the gameplay structure of the latter. It is a co-op adventure, and you'll have to team up with two other players to tackle the dungeons by solving clever puzzles and fighting enemies. It'll be out at the end of the year.

3DS MeroidPrimeFederationForce scrn022016 gets a bit more interesting, with the most surprising reveal being a Metroid Prime spin-off developed by Luigi's Mansion 2 studio Next Level Games. Metroid Prime: Federation Force is a co-operative first-person shooter for up to four players, putting you in the alien universe of Metroid Prime as you have to blast up monsters to complete missions. The visuals hark back to NST's early DS shooter Metroid Prime Hunters. Federation Force will also include the multiplayer Blast Ball game which was shown off during Sunday's Nintendo World Championships.

The other major new announcement was Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. It is a cross-over between the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series, and if that doesn't sound like one of the best things ever, then we don't know what does. Each are very popular RPG spin-offs of the Mario franchise, containing great art styles and sharp humour. Paper Jam Bros. really does look like it takes all that and doubles it, going from our first look.

Early 2016 will be rounded off by Hyrule Warriors Legends – the handheld version of the Wii U hit – and the eagerly awaited strategy RPG Fire Emblem Fates.
